NEW YORK, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp(CVC.N) reached a new deal with CBS Corp (CBS.N) to carry its broadcast network as well as Showtime, the Smithsonian Channel, and CBS College Sports Network, the companies said on Friday.

In the New York, Cablevision will continue to carry WCBS2, while Cablevision customers in central and southern New Jersey will receive Philadelphia's KYW, which is the local CBS station, and WPSG, which is the local CW network.

UPDATE 1-CBS and Cablevision reach new TV deal | Industries | Technology, Media & Telecommunications | Reuters

In the very least this means we'll get Smithsonian in HD. Possibly the remaining Showtime channel we don't have and CBS College Sports HD as well.

But why do you need the gold package - for the smithsonian channel? And I assume all of these are going to be switched digital video?

So far, Cablevision has used Switched Digital Video for On-Demand and other single-user or very-limited-user programming. It makes sense that they will continue to do that, at least for a while. SDV mainly benefits CV when its transmission can be avoided altogether (as in, the single-user has stopped watching).

From November 16-18, 2009, Cablevision will launch two (2) Standard Definition channels and one (1) High Definition channel. Tele El Salvador is the first international channel from El Salvador. This 24-hour standard definition channel features exclusive live coverage of news, sports and special events. Tele El Salvador will be available to iO en Espanol customers on digital channel 228. The Smithsonian Channel features original documentaries, explorations, innovative, groundbreaking programs highlighting America’s historical, cultural and scientific heritage. The Smithsonian Channel will be available as both a standard definition channel on digital channel 163 and a high definition channel on channel 780 in the iO Gold Package.

Hey everyone. Glad to see you'll be getting The Smithsonian Channel shortly. It's a great channel (IMO) with some pretty cool programming. I'm actually watching it right now, "Making The Monkees" is on...please don't judge me:)

CBS College Sports HD launches, channel moves to iO package.

Effective Tuesday, December 29, 2009, Cablevision will launch CBS College sports (Channel 143) and CBS College Sports HD (Channel 793) into the iO Package making both Standard and High Definition versions available to Residential iO Package, iO Silver, iO Gold and iO Sports Pak subscribers as well as Business Class iO package and iO Sports Pak subscribers. CBS College Sports is a multimedia network and the first dedicated exclusively to college sports 24 hours a day.
