Any idea of when a successor to the Hopper 3 will roll out? I am interested in upgrading from the original Hopper but don't want to miss out on newer technology. Thoughts?

Welcome to SatGuys!

I don't think there are any imminent successors to the Hopper 3, as there really haven't been any rumblings or rumors of one around here yet...and you can rest assured, if there was even a hint of one, there would be discussions around here on the subject! :D

What about the Hopper Lite that has been mentioned in the forum?

I would say that is step back, not in technology necessarily (though we do not know) but in amount of tuners and maybe features. The thinking is it will be the replacement for VIP receivers I believe. I don't even know how much substance there is to that happening.

Must be a bit of substance to it as DISH told retailers that we won't be able to use VIP equipment for new customers starting in October. We shall see...

Yep, I think you are correct.

Hopper lite is just a 722 with the Hopper UI...

Don't get too excited. :)

I would assume that some of the hardware is a bit different, I mean to be able to use the Carbon UI. I wouldn't think that since the 722 series is going on 10 years old.

You would hope so. We went from a 722k to a Hopper 1 and the H1 was nicer and faster (meaning the 722k was noticeably slower). And now they're going to put the Carbon UI on it when people are already complaining about the performance on the H1 ?

Seriously, what additional features could they add to a Hopper 4? I feel like the Hopper 3 has reached a point where it has all the features necessary. Anything they add now would only appeal to a very small niche crowd and could hardly justify the cost.

Whatever features there might be will make bluegras happy and screaming for more! ;)

What Bobvick said. No CPU or RAM sufficient for the job. So I take your post to mean new HW, but not much functional difference from the ViP722. Except- would they REALLY have an SD only TV2? So to speak.

Single code base: The Holy Grail. And like the Holy Grail, never to be achieved.

I expected a Hopper 4 at the next CES. Now, I doubt it. Yes, there are improvements in UHD, such as HDR and Dolby that might gain from HW improvements. But wouldn't hold my breath. Certainly, it will be too early for ATSC-3 support, which would only affect the USB dongle, and in which Dish has little to no interest anyway.

There could conceivably never BE a Hopper 4.
