Dish quarterly profit misses on pay-TV subscriber losses . . .

They're still managing to maintain profitability, but wow...that churn is not sustainable. They're losing a million subscribers a year!
 
I would like to see the breakdown over which had more impact, the loss of Univision or the HBO extortion.

I’m sorry but i believe that is just a excuse that Dish is putting out why they lost subs, DirecTV/ATT (the biggest at 544,000), Comcast, Charter all had lost subs and none of them lost channels.

The only other one that lost channels and subscribers was DNOW ( 83,000), but they also lost subs the previous quarter before the channel purge because the service just sucks compared to the other OTT providers.

I believe it's a combination of factors. Annual price increases of traditional pay TV services which have crossed the uncomfortable threshold for many people. That plus the plethora of perceived "cheap" streaming services and free OTA channels. Then you have millenial-age people and younger who mostly use only Netflix and Prime Video. It's a perfect storm. I still think satellite will have relevance in rural areas for awhile, at least until broadband penetration reaches remote areas.

Good point, I didn't know the DTV or other numbers.

I wonder how long the channel owners will take to realize they created this mess and it is their responsibility to stop the bubble from bursting.
 
Yep, or cord swapping. Going from satellite to paid streaming isn't really cord cutting, it's cord swapping. True cord cutting is going to OTA only.

It is semantics really. Yeah, going from Dish to YTTV is just churn IMHO. Going from Dish to Netflix, Prime, and Hulu, is something else.

The answer to what it costs to delivery service to a customer - about $4.50-4.75 per month per customer when including their Mexican service.

So, if they dropped to 4.8 million customers - the cost would be about $9.00 per month per customer. A fair price to delivering service.
