DISH -VS- VOOM - A Settlement has been reached!

A few weeks back people were discussing the upcoming rate increase. This is what I came up with for my package. AT200: $5 increase, BB@Home: $1-$2 increase, 722K dvr: $1-$2 increase. So I'm expecting a $7-$9 increase. Now for people with premiums and multiple dvr's, then they'll probably be paying a lot more. The only thing I can see really screwing us over (even more than a $7-$9 increase) would be charging a second outlet fee of $7 for my 722K since it has the TV2 out option.

I hope Dish dont go that TV2 fees for its Duo boxes & instead Dish management should not take any increase & bonus for the next year....thereby paying for this settlement which they created rather then force a big increase in cost for us subscriber.

I expect about $5 more in my montly bill next year....nothing more. Lets see what happens
 
Wow, only took Dish 4 months and a lawsuit to solve this programming dispute.

One thing for sure is the $700 million is coming from somewhere, and it sure aint Charlie's pocket. Im sure we will start seeing the effects of this come Febuary 1st when their price freeze ends and they raise everyones rates.


Claude, you knew prices would increase regardless of what happened. No way Dish would go that long with a price freeze to just keep the prices the same when it's over. I think having a price freeze almost guarantees that prices will go up after it ends.
 
Do you think anything will happen to the lady from Dish that ran out of the courtroom. I think her name is Crawford. What about all them emails that were deleted twice. Any heads going to roll for that one!
 
When February comes around I think we'll be seeing some major changes in packages and pricing. They are going to be switching things up a lot in order to spike more interest for new customers. Dish has been asking retailers what they think would be some good ideas for new promotions. I can't really remember them going out of their way to ask us for our opinions on this subject.

I hope they create more choice in mini-packages, like they have started with the Welcome Pack, Heartland Pack, etc.

Dish hasn't added ANY new channels or had HD added since then? Wouldn't you be ahead when these channels come back? I'll answer my question, yes they have added several channels since losing ESPN NEWS in HD, including sports channels in fact several sports channels. You indeed will be ahead of where you were when these come back and actually are most likely ahead now.

I am sure you will hear that she will be leaving for better opportunities come early next year. I don't see old Charlie "moving" on without a little closure.

Well time will tell. I think the whole situation was sad. Sure would have liked to been a fly on the wall watching the court session.

Having the history of the industry hiking prices on your side is not much a foresight, or much a hindsight.

I suspect a lot of people like Dish for the innovative technologies and programming provided in the past. They came at certain expenses. If you want to be on the cutting edge, you need to be willing to take risks, and expect to be affected by the risks.

VOOM was a good example of a cutting edge service gone bad. Alternatively and realistically, Dish can learn a lesson or two and play safe from now on, but then there will no longer be reasons for you to like it, Dish will be just like every other provider.

BTW, any price hike will not be dictated by the settlement, rather by how much the market can bear. Dish cannot price itself out of contention with its competitors.

If Dish could raise prices to cover everything, Voom settlement included, and keep their customers, they would. Probably just about any company would. They can't, as that statement above is correct. I see the predictions of $7 for package price increases. I don't think especially with such a horrible economy Dish can do that even by saying we didn't raise prices for two years.
As a more possible scenario I think they have to keep it under or at $5. And even at that, I don't see how they can raise other fees at the same time if it impacts everyone, like raising DVR fees for instance. $5 but $1 here and another $1 there is back to that $7 which I just don't see flying. It may not mean alot of people switching because they may be around the same cost, but could mean more just not getting Sat or Cable or some just not picking Dish over another carrier. Or it could be someone who wants another service but keeps Dish because they are paying less, but now that is no longer holding them back.
So instead I can see them tightening any credits being given, less incentives to keep customers though they usually don't offer too much, and less movie discounts. They may find other things to cut back on in the overall business. They may even have to spread it out, meaning go up next year a little more than they would have.

A big distinction for Dish is their final monthly cost to consumers. I can't stress enough how friends when they get around to asking what I pay with Dish are stunned it is so much less than Cable, with usually even more channels, better picture, etc. etc. It may not be as much a distinction from Direct TV in cost, but it is some. Dish needs to maintain that. So unless Direct TV and Cable do not raise prices this year, Dish has a little wiggle room because they are already less. If they can keep the increase somewhere near what others are going up this year, they are on solid ground. If they can't, and go up much more than others do, and narrow the price gap, that could be a problem.
If the economy wasn't so bad they could try emphasizing other things about their service, but once you are the same cost as others, it's harder to distinguish yourself. Direct TV has done it by have the NFL Sunday ticket for example, and up until recently have virtually all the sports available. I will point out while the NFL remains, that distinction is dwindling, Dish has some sports Direct TV does not, Direct TV has not picked up a couple of the new RSN's. (Nor has Dish) While Direct TV does not really offer the NFLZ unless you get Sunday Ticket, (Yes I know, some have apparently been able to do that but it isn't wide spread) Dish does offer it and many will say they would actually prefer NFLZ. So to me, it is in the best interest for Dish to try very hard to keep the increase as low as they can and still have it make business sense.

AMC is rerunning last night's episode of The Walking Dead along with last week's at several times this week. It has a weird Episode number (3 weeks before last night's), but check the original air date as it matches.

Once the On Demand by Channel Tile is back up as well, you will probably be able to download shows that you missed as well (maybe we will get lucky and they will add the ones blacked out from July until now)
 
I agree Tampa8.Dish can't just hike prices by $7 and not have a very detrimental impact on subscriber loss.Dis almost has to stay below dtv in programming prices to keep a competitive balance.

I'm sticking with my $2-$3 price increase prediction.They may even go with another $5 for two years increase which would be basically the same amount.
