emm count on cable card

what does it mean, just had a cc installed yesterday on my xbr 960 and it didn't work to good. tech kept saying the emm count was a 0 and would't go up. so he came back out today and put another cc in and it seemed to work,emm count was at about 44 when he left. but as soon as he was gone the tv went blank. I had to do a reset on the card,and the channels came back but my (emm) count was at 0 again.could someone enlighten me about all this please. I have TWC by the way. thanks

thanks gdarwin. that was some in depth reading, great link. any way I gave up and took the card back to twc and got an hd box.
