Petition seeks end to nickname

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — A petition signed by more than 100 faculty members at the University of North Dakota asking that the university begin a "respectful process" to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname was submitted to the university system chancellor in February and became public this week.

Chancellor Robert Potts responded by mail to the group, saying state officials are looking into the matter, according to a report in the Grand Forks Herald.

The Fighting Sioux nickname and logo have been considered controversial for many years, and the NCAA originally decreed that teams with American Indian nicknames and mascots could not play host to NCAA postseason tournaments. The governing body of college sports later issued a waiver for North Dakota, which was awarded the NCAA West Regional men's hockey tournament several years ago.

When casino mogul and former Fighting Sioux player Ralph Engelstad donated $100 million for the hockey arena that bears his name, he said he would withdraw funding if the Sioux logo was eliminated.

The North Dakota board of higher education passed a resolution in 2001 that supported the school retaining the nickname.

And hockey arena has a "Fighting Sioux" emblem on every seat in the place.:D

PC run amock.

I live in WV, so how long will it be before some do gooder decides that the name "Mountaineers" is offensive to his family?

We've been through this before. No minds were changed then and I doubt any will change this time.

BTW congrats to Maine, Wisconsin, Boston College, and North Dakota for making the Frozen Four.

Don't even get me started on this one.......

But as for the games
Congrats to the Sioux for two great games
Congrats to Wisconsin for an awesome game yesterday (3 OT's)

and a special thanks to Holy Cross for knocking UMTC out :):D

I can't stand all this PC crap. Nowhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights is there anything that says people have a right NOT be offended! I see or read things that offend me every day, BFD, that's part of the price of free speech.

It really isa shame that college hockey does not have wider coverage.

How sad. I'm a season ticket hold to almost every Florida State sport. I've been through this fight. I wish them the best of luck, but the MSM and the busy bodies and the pleasure police seem to have nothing better to do than harrass people.

Florida State is not being asked to change their nickname, logo or mascot. They were on the original list but appealed and wona waiver. and the request that is out there came from the NCAA not the MSM.

Personally I have no problem with the Seminole situation. The depiction is respectful and the native people have consented to it---they even assisted in the appeal. Some of the others are more complicates situations---the Fighting Sioux included.

No, we aren't changing anything...now. We were asked though. We won our "appeal" after the NCAA figured out that they looked EXTREMELY foolish. When the Seminole Nation supported us and came out and let it be known that the NCAA had not even asked them their opinion, that pretty much sealed the NCAA's fate. As for the rest, this was fueled by political correctness that the MSM just loved. They had their smarmy fingers in it up to the knuckles.
