Filthy Scumbag Hackers get their just desserts!

Not only legalities, but they [the hackers] don't even realize what they put the receiver through. Bad software can ruin a good receiver or make it unstable.

Then when all is said and done, the fun is gone. You're sitting there hooked on MTV, porn, and all sorts of nonsense that means nothing.

I'll spend time blindscanning FRESH material. Thank you very much.

P.S. They will end up putting their receivers on Ebay. Saying something like "lightly used for a few months but decided to get a better receiver". LOL

Blame Canada! Blame Canada!
It seems that everything's gone wrong
Since Canada came along!

I'm Canadian and all I can say to that is...............that's funny! It is curious that every time you hear of a bust like that its from somewhere in Quebec, a province that a few years ago voted to seperate from Canada (or not as it ended up). There was another bust I heard about in the news a few months ago of a large manufacturing facility in Quebec. Interesting..........I dunno, how wide spread is the pirating problem in the States?

First guess is that DTV has a couple million more customers but DISH has more viewers. That may be off a bit but the sooner they secure their signal the sooner we will be able to pick up receivers dirt cheap from places like Ebay.

Ha! If you like that you'd probably like the movie :) Its a filthy language musical where the US starts a war with Canada because of a Canadian movie.

I'm glad this happened. Anyone who thinks they can actually run a company to do that kind of thing and get away with it is insane.

I've never read a report with numbers or anything, but from what I do know, it is mostly individuals doing it on their own via information on the internet. I remember my father talking about people offering him equipment that he could watch the VCII stuff off C-band in the early 90s, I think that was pretty common. But D* and E* make it a lot more difficult now, so it's not very common. Heck, D* hits our boxes every couple of months and if we don't have a phone line hooked up, they turn us off and we have to call and get it turned back on! D*/E* isn't THAT expensive, so people would rather just pay for it and not get into trouble and not have to worry about getting it "fixed" every few months or so...

Actually, it appears to be VERY widespread. Much worse than I ever suspected. I realized this as I visited various so-called "FTA" sites looking for information about some of the specific receivers I've owned in the short time I've been in this hobby.

I've found dozens of "FTA" websites, with some of them having memberships in the six digits, dwarfing the membership here at satguys. Also, hasn't anyone noticed the sudden influx of new FTA'ers here a few weeks back? (As well as a recent drop in new posters?) That is because of the success of the E* and BEV anti-piracy efforts during that period, and the pirates recent success overcoming it. Plain and simple.

Another way to gauge which way the battle is going in the satellite piracy wars is to watch the prices of receivers on Ebay.

And I'm not even counting the stolen and counterfiet hacked cards and E/BEV hardware, which is probably what these Canadian pirates were selling, as it's not illegal to sell FTA receivers which are legitimate until modified.

BTW, when thinking of the term "Canadian pirates" does anybody picture a swashbuckling pirate in a flannel shirt , wool cap, and eyepatch going "Arrrrrrrrr, eh."

Every day Gary.....Every day!

When I was working for an Express-vu retailer they changed the way they sold the systems to include the need to sign a 1 or 2 year contract (otherwise the price of the equipment went up), had to have a valid driver's license and had to provide a credit card number just so if you didn't activate the receiver, they'd charge your card (can't remember how much) for the full price of the equipment. I think the figure back then (probably 1.5 to 2 years ago) was 1/2 of all the recievers they sold did not get activated at all! Half......that's a lot of pirates that they subsidised because they did not have any way to ensure that a unit would ever be activated. I'm pretty sure that with the mis-use of FTA recievers in addition to all the factory boxes that are being used, the figures must be staggering. Why they haven't come up with an unhackable solution is beyond me. Direct Tv did! EH!
