George Stienbrenner Passes Away at Age 80

From ESPN.com:
After the Yankees ended a 13-year playoff drought in 1995, and the team was celebrating its wild-card berth, Steinbrenner told the manager and coaching staff they had better win the World Series or they'd all be fired.

They didn't, and so they were

I never liked Steinbrenner. I always figured that if you spent more money on players than anyone else did, then you would win. But Gene Autry and Dan Snyder have shown otherwise.

There are as many Yankees fan haters as Yankee fans, yes even in New York, but those who did not care about the Yankees did admired certain aspects of the team and it’s organization; The New York Yankees with its colorful history always provided the catalyst for Baseball’s excitement than any other team in history.

One of the reasons that both the Giants and the Dodgers pull out of New York City was another testament to the Yankees image and status in the game.

RIP George.

R.I.P. to the most hated man in baseball. At least when I was a kid he was.

I'm sure like today, it all came down to money....

O'Malley was looking for a contingency in case Moses and other New York politicians refused to let him build the Brooklyn stadium he wanted, and sent word to the Los Angeles officials that he was interested in talking. Los Angeles offered him what New York would not: a chance to buy land suitable for building a ballpark, and own that ballpark, giving him complete control over all its revenue streams.

RIP, George. I have had the pleasure of meeting him and he was a very down to earth person who would take care of his family and friends in anyway possible.

RIP George.... you will be missed. Controversial character only because of extreme desire to win. Always put his money back into the team and expected 100% effort all the time. Many did not like his approach but people who live in NY appreciated the fact that he never thought twice about putting $$$ into the NY Yankees. Even in the 80s when the Yankees did not win anything, he was putting $$ money into the team.

:up

R.I.P. to Mr. Steinbrenner. I'm more of a casual fan, but if there's any team I'll watch it is the Yankees. If anybody gets the YES Network, they're currently running a tribute to "The Boss". The MLB Network is as well. I enjoyed Larry David's impersonation of him on "Seinfeld".

Imagine how different things would most likely have been had Steinbrenner's offer been accepted.....

Steinbrenner returned to shipping, taking over his father's business before buying the giant American Shipbuilding Company. The Cleveland Indians were next on Steinbrenner's wish list. He offered $9 million for the team in the early 1970s, but was rebuffed. Then he turned his sights on New York.

George probably Re Hired Billy this morning :)

...and will Re Fire him at dusk. :D Of course, if there were truly a heaven then Billy Martin would be managing the Detroit Tigers and on top the pearly gates would be affixed a old English letter D.

Exactly what I was thinking - Reunited with Billy once again. I wonder if he's buying his way into heaven.

This guy forever changed free agency. RIP!
