General Motors, the first automaker to offer satellite radio in Cadillacs in 2001, announced Wednesday it plans to build 1.55 million cars with factory-installed XM Satellite Radio in 2006.

It’s the largest number of GM vehicles with XM to be built in a single year and the largest number for any car manufacturer. Honda plans to offer 550,000 vehicles with factory-installed XM radios in 2006. In total, more than 2.1 million cars will come equipped with XM in 2006.

GM built 1.4 million vehicles with XM in 2005 and 1.17 million in 2004. “GM was out in front of the satellite radio movement and our customers have benefited enormously,” said Mark LaNeve, vp of vehicle sales, service and marketing for GM North America.

For model-year 2006, nearly 90 percent of GM’s U.S. retail models will offer factory-installed XM as either standard equipment or an option.

“GM has been a key partner in growing the XM subscriber base to more than five million subscribers today,” said Hugh Panero, president and CEO for XM. XM has forecast it will have 6 million subscribers by the end of 2005.
