I just subscribed to Dish and the online statement has a fee section down the side describing downgrading, DVR etc. and the HD Enabling Fee of $5 is listed as a fee.

The billing literature does still state there is a $5 HD enabling fee for those that have HD equipment (ViP series) but do not subscribe to HD.

However, if you call customer service they will tell you that it has been dropped.

Many new connects are being set up with HD equipment and do not subscribe to HD. They are not paying the HD enabling fee.

Although, the literature saying one thing and customer service telling you another does make you wonder. Be nice if they were both on the same page.

The fee should of never existed if they wanted to upgrade all subs to mpeg 4 equipment. Now lets get them to drop the $5.98 dvr fee (because of Tivo lawsuit), we would have it made.

YES YES YES! I used to have a 501 and laughed that there was no fee for it, but there was for a 508 or 510. I don't understand how they can charge a fee for something that really is not a monthly service. DVR capabilities is a feature of the IRD you have.

TIVO charges a fee for their guide data and other misc things.

508 has no DVR fee, but 510 does.

Now the 211 has no DVR fee except for $40 HDD enabling fee.

They do not have to justify the fee, they just charge you for it.

BINGO! We have a winner! This is why DISH continues to make large profits every quarter while losing subs at a terrific rate. The ever growing list of fees that they charge their present subs. It is not sustainable over time though. As DISH continues to contract in size due to more churn , they will have to cut some of these fees in order to keep what they have left in customers. THe hd enabling fee being terminated is the first one to go. The DVR fee would be the logical one to either be eliminated or reduced to PER ACCOUNT rather than PER DVR receiver. This is why DIRECTV is continuing to add subs at a fantastic rate while DISH is still losing subs quarter after quarter; DISH has too many FEES - just because they can ! DISH also has the higher cost for additional/lease receivers at 7.00 for hd receivers. DISH has the highest price in pay per views at 4.99 for sd and 5.99 for hd /5.99 for sd/6.99 for hd - recorded to DISH 's portion of the hard drive. The no phone line connection fee at 5.00 is another fee. ALL of these fees are because DISH can charge for them. They are all within DISH's control and can be reduced in price and or eliminated if they wanted to.
