No MRV here yet, but hooked mine up to a homeplug last night when I moved it into my Bedroom (had to add RG6 as it replaced an H20),,,

I have whole home DVR hooked up back in December with a HR24 and H24 in the bedroom. I have that little unit with internet cables behind my living room TV. I also took another Cat5 cable from my router directly into my HR24.

Is there a benefit from this connection or is it overkill?

With a DECA Whole House connection you can't have an ethernet cable connected to the HR24 as it will disable the internet connection.
Your router needs to be connected via a Broadband DECA module so that the internet is available to the HR24..
