Gotta admire the guy.

Talk about "an American success story!"

In spite of the lack of mention in that bio I too think Charlie was a reseller of DirecTV for awhile.

How can the smaller company with much less revenue purchase the larger company with much more revenue?

Borrowed money. DISH was smaller than DirecTV when they tried to buy it and Sirius was smaller thsn XM. These things happen sometimes.

Also at the time Dish was making money and DIRECTV was losing money like crazy. That makes Dish worth more than DIRECTV in a lot of ways. If Dish did not have to compete with DIRECTV they would have made even more money. The merger made good sense all around finacially, just not with the DOJ and monopoly considerations. The thought was if Dish could run DIRECTV with the larger sub base and same cost models (i.e. probably drop NFL ST like a hot potato), Dish would make money like crazy.

DirecTv had a higher market capitalization and I believe that is what the King was referring to.
