Sun, Sun and more Sun!!!!
If I "move" to the NYC metro area this fall will local sports (most importantly the NY Giants) games be blacked out for locals? I know in NE it's not that way so I would assume the same holds true for there too. I am thinking about only getting RedZone this year, but being able to watch the Giants on the local NYC station would keep me from having to subscribe to ST this season. Thoughts?

Thank you.

The Giant games shouldn't be blacked out. Since they are on local channels that are on CONUS beams, you should be able to get them anywhere.

no. Since your "address" would be in the NY market all sports would show on there. Also your RSN will change so you'd get MSG, MSG2, SNY and YES.

one additional note. If you do move to NY you will get hit with the "RSN fee" since you will have 4 RSN's (I dont know if you have that fee right now or not)

OK for Giants/Jets, but not every team

Just a note- the New York network channels can be accessed nationally since they're used as generic Eastern Time Zone channels. So, you can view them, including NY sports, with a suitable mailing address.

BUT... many other cities are serviced by spot beams and the signal is *not* viewable nationwide.

All cities except for NY and LA are on spot beams.

So saying if I "moved" to somewhere in the Nyc area I could get the ny locals and watch all my Knicks games on the msg network even though I'm in Oklahoma?

Yes, mostly. You would get NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX as well as the rsns for New York. You wouldn't get the other locals since those are on spot beams.

You do know that your service can be terminated for doing this right? This is also breaking FCC rules. Notbsurr ifbyou could potentially get in any trouble for this, but, I wouldn't advise it.

My parents have dish and have been movers for about 4-5 years now. They live much closer to Flint than Detroit but since they are 1 mile past the county line satellite makes them take Detroit locals. We all went to school and work in the Flint area so local news from that DMA is much more relevant for them. Cable offers both Flint and Detroit locals at their house but satellite can't do that. We "moved" them to another property we own that is 1.8 miles away because it qualifies for Flint locals and not having them is a deal breaker for my dad.

We certainly don't feel bad about doing this and I wouldn't worry about getting in trouble. Dish/Direct don't care which locals you get as long as you pay your bill and aren't obvious about it. There is no team of investigators looking for movers. Just don't do something stupid like call in a tech for a receiver upgrade without moving back first.

Yeah I guess you're right. As long as you're paying, they don't care lol. I know there isn't a team looking for people who do this. I am a customer support tech for DirecTV and I know that people with multiple addresses sometimes causes issues with activations and when we try to troubleshoot issues with certain channels not being in the place of your service address can prolong troubleshooting because we didn't know that was a factor. That's all.

This is technically against the Terms of Use, but (particularly during peak hours) no one is gonna care enough to escalate the info anyway.

hmmm guess I was lucky then
5 years with Directv and only 18 months or so at my legit address (the last 13 months for sure at my apartment). Otherwise only would move home when I did upgrades

You also would not get your own locals in Oklahoma.

Yes this is true I know but I get locals from Amarillo and not Oklahoma City. It sucks because I do a lot of business in Okc and don't care about Amarillo at all.

To recap - if the OP "moves" to NYC DMA, they will only get the CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox for locals. They will not get My9, WPIX, etc. They will get all sports on the NYC RSN channels. They will NOT get their OK locals (or RSNs) on Directv. If the OP wants their locals, they could always get an antenna and AM21 and have access to all of the locals they receive at their residence.

Is there any area in the NYC locals DMA that is far enough away from the city that there is overlap with a neighboring sports market? I don't see anywhere, but it could be interesting to have that. When traveling through that area, I am always amazed as to how geographically small the coverage area is for NYC OTA, and the DMA in general.

I always thought Fairfield County, CT was but checking the RSN map I was wrong. They are in the NYC DMA and they get NY RSN's but I thought they also got NESN and CSN NE but guess not
