Netflix Hopper 3 Question

It's recommended to connect both Hopper 3's to the internet but to different Networks rather than one shared connection with only 1 Hopper 3 connected or connecting both Hopper 3's to the same network - which is a big no-no

That is why I disconnected the wired connection to the Family Room Hopper3. Are you saying that I should setup a subnet within my home network? I have Spectrum Cable internet modem feeding a Netgear R8000 router. Initially, I had both Hopper3 receivers wired to Gigabit switches but one of the Hopper3 receivers would internally disconnect the wired connection. Which one would disconnect depended on which one booted up faster. After talking to Dish network support I disconnected the Family Room Hopper3 so the setup would remain the same each time.

I am not sure how to create two subnet networks so that each Hopper3 has their own network. Feel free to give me some suggestions. Again the only problem I have noticed is with the Netflix app on the Hopper3 that gets it internet via Moca.

The easiest way would be to setup another router, specifically for 1 Hopper, as far as I can think

But how would the second router connect to the internet? You only have one default gateway 192.168.1.1 or am I confused? Remember I only have one cable modem with an address of 192.168.100.1

I only have one H3 connected by Ethernet. My other H3 and two 4K Joeys are in MoCA mode. They all have been working fine other than sometimes no Ultra HD 4K Netflix. Both WJs work good too. Maybe MattG will have some info about the Netflix slow speed when we hear from him. If I get a chance today I will try to connect one Hopper by Ethernet direct to my Charter Cable modem and see what the Netflix app speed is.

I am running with two routers, one down stairs and one upstairs. The router that is down stairs is setup to as a wireless extender only. I could set that one up as a sub-net router for one Hopper only. I sure don't want to do that but will if MattG says that is what needs to be done for the Netflix issue.

I had this pop up again last night. Netflix not showing any 4K shows so I checked everything out.
On wifi my H3 showed 91 mbps (on a 100/10 plan)down on the H3, which is right what I would expect, then went to the Netflix app and saw it showed 11.3 mbps down. Rebooted the H3 and instantly everything looked good again. All 4K shows were right back.

There seems to be a lot of us with same issue. My wife is getting tired of having to reboot the Hopper all the time to get Netflix Ultra HD 4K back. Thanks for posting.

I know it’s more convenient to use Netflix on the Hopper, but for me, it’s still the last resort. Almost any other device handles Netflix better.. both for speed and for audio
Yep, I hear ya. I think I will wean the wife from the Hopper Netflix app and use the TV's app. Oh boy, here we go again! My poor wife, and me too. LOL

Actually the easiest way would be to create a VLAN with a different subnet and gateway but that would require a layer3 capable switch.

There are some routers that will allow you to do two (or more) segmented networks but they are usually pretty expensive. It's almost always cheaper just to use multiple routers.

We used to have Sonicwalls at work, with Sonicpoints as the routers. They allowed 2 different networks on each Sonicpoint. We configured one for "public/guest" and the other for staff. They were expensive and flaky. We went back to old school separate routers.

I didn't say the cheapest, I said the easiest and will add probably the easiest to troubleshoot.

Most people who have a residential Dish account have neither the technical expertise nor the available funds to do what you suggest.
Not claiming they do, what I am claiming is it is technically easier to set up a VLAN with a second IP range than it is to piggyback two home routers so each is able to provide access to devices on different IP ranges.

You can purchase a refurb HP J4902A layer-3 switch for less than $100 which is less than most good home routers so cost shouldn't be an issue.

Also isn't this a geek's kind of web site with a lot of guys that will home roll their wiring for satellite, shouldn't be that hard for them to set up a VLAN.

I also plan to not change my home network until I get more information from the Dish Technical Networking group. Even if you use two routers in series, DHCP should only be handled by the primary router. Both my wired Hopper3 and my Moca Hopper3 have excellent download speeds of 110-120 Mbps. The only problem I currently see is that Netflix app on the Moca Hopper3 and Netflix app on the Joey2 connected to the Moca Hopper3 both show the wrong Internet address. Yet the Internet address of both Hopper3 and my Joey2 Receiver are correct. Since I don’t use Netflix on my Hopper3 I don’t see a reason to change at this time. I plan to call Dish and talk to their networking group next week. I will report back what I find out.

I did find the problem with Alexa discovering my Hopper3 receivers. My son had linked my Dish account to his Alexa account. My Hopper3 and Joey receivers were discovered on his Alexa account. I deleted my Dish devices out of his Alexa account but I still can not discover them with my Alexa account. I will probably need to do some technical support with Amazon next week.
