First, some background:
I'm currently a DirecTV customer and have been for something like 14 years. In this past year my 6+ year old DirecTivo (R10) has been acting up and I started shopping around for a replacement. Since DirecTV doesn't seem to want to give me any sort of a package to keep me (although they would if I was a new customer, grr), I started looking at other companies. Dish seemed to give me everything I needed and more than I'm getting now for less than DirecTV, so I started trying to switch over to them.
The problem:
I'm in the Springfield(MA) DMA (zip 01007). For whatever reason, our Fox & ABC are not available on Dish. I don't mean they're not available in HD, I mean they're straight up not on Dish (although I'm getting Fox & ABC on DirecTV). I've been trying to call Dish every few months, as well as lurking in the forums here, to try and get an idea when they may become available. Obviously, the inability to get Fox and ABC is very much of a deal-killer for me.
The weirdness:
Today, after my Tivo rebooted again for no good reason, I called Dish again. The salesman on the phone was stunned to learn that there was somewhere that the locals weren't all available, did some digging, put me on hold, and came back on to tell me he was able to sign me up for ABC & Fox from NYC. I was, to say the least, somewhat surprised, since I [though I] knew that Dish didn't do the distant network thing themselves. He was insistent, though, that if I got the superstation package he'd be able to put the ABC & Fox in as well. I let him sign me up, scheduled an install, and hung up. A little later, still feeling pretty weird about it, I called back, got another guy, had him look over what I signed up for, and discovered, as I suspected, that ABC & Fox weren't, in fact, on the list of what I'd be getting. I canceled my order.
Request for advice:
Now what? I'm looking for, what I have to believe, is something fairly simple. The major over-the-air networks (Fox/ABC/CBS/NBC/PBS). A DVR with 2 rooms attached to it. HD on the main line stations (locals would be nice but not necessary). A moderate slate of the major "basic cable" channels (of the NickJR, ESPN, Discovery, NFL network type). I'd like to spend no more than I'm currently spending for basically that (minus the HD & with the DVR only in one room).
I would consider getting an external antenna and hooking it into the system to get those two channels, but I have no idea what kind of reception I get here (I've never used an over-the-air antenna here and I get lousy reception on radio & cell phone here as I'm nestled behind a small mountain, so it's probably pretty iffy) and I have no idea how well antennas play with DVRs in terms of being able to record off them.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try next? I find it hard to believe there's no way in this entire DMA to get Fox and ABC; wouldn't that be as much of a deal killer for everyone else as it is for me? As I said, I've spent some time lurking in the forums so I see other people have complained about similar things, but I haven't seen any good resolution. Is there one?
I'd welcome and appreciate any input on this issue. Thanks!
