Yes, I see. Well, that is very interesting.
From reading the web site
http://www.popcatcher.com of the technology developer, they seem to have worked out the means to identify talk and commercial content, which allows them to extract just what you want (Yes! You too can record commercials without any music interruption!). Reminds me of those DJ audition tapes, just lead ins and outs and 5 seconds of song. So that's part of it.
I wonder how they will ID the songs to provide Artist and Title. With so much radio consolidation in the USA there are only a few 1000 songs being played on 99% of the stations, but projects like CDDB show just how difficult it is to catalog everything, and the difficulties in creating a unique hash from real-world data.
And, I wonder if this technology will be used in all TimeTrax software? Many people have commented on problems with cutting songs based on the timing of the metadata change. I suspect that in some cases actually listening to the audio would provide better edits. However, I can think of several types of audio stream where this just will not work. As to the ability to ID a song, I wonder if that too would be used/available in all TimeTrax software? It seems like a waste when that information is right there for you to use (all 16 characters of it!), but how cool would it be to get artist and title from pre-produced shows (e.g. Midnight Special folk show).
Very very interesting.
