Equator HD is a nice channel, but they seem to have a setup problem of some sort that causes loads of "pixel dancing" all over the screen. It's sort of like looking through a screen wire and moving your head from side to side. From talking to someone else, they said this is probably being caused by the following:

They are not bandwidth limiting the signal to less than 1/2 the pixal rate like they should. That causes beating between the two. In other words they are not sampling at or above the Nyquist rate.

This explains it: http://umech.mit.edu/weiss/PDFfiles...res/lec20nm.pdf

They appear to be sampling below the Nyquist rate.

Thanks for posting about this problem Seandudley. I see artifacts or something in the picture which hurts the resolution and was about to accuse VOOM of bummping up 480i pix to 1080i. Certainly affects the quality of the images and it IS like looking through a window screen. I didn't know the technical explanation but I knew it wasn't the quality of HDTV. This is particularly true in the France: Cote' Azure which was just running.

Sean, I retract my statement about improvement. It must have been the 2 shows I watched because The Shirikami Mountains was absolutely awful! The opening sequence of the forest was swarming with mosquito noise, I watched it for all of 30 seconds then turned the channel. I cannot watch such crappy video on a 110" screen. Back to HDNET until Voom gets there act together.

I just realized I see the same mosquito noise on OTA ANALOG. This doesn't look as bad as OTA analog of course since the resolution is higher, but it's the same thing. That's the thing I noticed right away when I first went from analog to digital OTA. No more mosquito noise.

I wonder if it's b/c these programs were made in Japan and they're old too. The Japanese have analog HD, or used to.

Those who saw these programs when they used to air on PBS, do you remember seeing mosquito noise then?

The analog noise you are seeing is not in the video, it is a reception issue. Analog is very prone to this. My Analog reception varies from pristine to crap on a day to day basis, I never know what I am going to get. A good Analog broadcast is better than any SD digital I have ever seen.

I've also noticed this problem on Equator HD. Why can't all channels appear as good as Discovery HD? I'm always amazed by the visual presentation that I see on DiscoveryHD .
