Sirius Signal Strength

I have been a subscriber to XM for quite a while and get excellent reception here in Alabama. Yesterday I installed a Sirius "Starmate Replay" for a friend. The signal strength cycles between half and full,
antenna position has no effect and the car is in an open area. We also see "Acquiring Signal" messages with greater frequency that would be expected. Is the radio or antenna (both new) defective?
Any thoughts?

Check the antenna connection at the dock. My wife had one in her Expedition, and that connector is flakey at best.

Thanks, I tried a different antenna with the same negative rusult. I am coming to the conclusion that the receiver is defective.

This particular receiver dosen't use a dock, the antenna and power connectors plug directly into the receiver. Strange, the signal strength meter cycles from half to full on regular one second intervals and without moving the vehicle the "acquiring signal" message pops up. Oh' well.
We'll try a different receiver and see what gives.
