Something To Think About

DirectTV and DishNet are in disarray. Ten year old satellites aren't cutting in anymore (there really not 'true' HD, it's 480p at best). The HD movement has begun. Voom has more than 1 satellite, as far as I know, and I certainly hope the Voom service continues- as the 'Superior' sat. service available. I have replaced DirectTV with Voom for several customers, and have had nothing but praise. What Voom needs is an 'HD Sports' package, however, not all sports venues contain HD camera's.

As a retailer/installer, at the Voom conference, I was informed that Cablevision has many disgruntled networks, which results in problems for Voom obtaining those networks for there serivce. Voom wants to disassociate itself form Cablevision.

As of 2.1.05 - Distributors of Voom say "No Deal". Retailers of Voom say "The Voom service will continue". Installers of Voom say "Your gonna have to pay me to remove the receivers and satellite".

Enjoy.

VOOM has 1 satellite, Rainbow 1 located at 61.5w. That's it they own no others. VOOM has a long term lease for space on AMC-6 at 72w. If that space is ever used is unknown.

Rainbow Media filed, with the Federal Communications Commission, a completed contract with Lockheed Martin under which the aerospace company will construct five Ka-band satellites for VOOM

does anyone know when the next voom satellite is supposed to launch if everything goes as plan and they are still in business.

As of 11.22.04 - The first is to be completed and launched in approximately 34 months, it will enable VOOM to increase its channel capacity to more than 5,000 high definition channels when operating in spot beam mode.

5,000 channels is with all 6 satellites if they did sell the first one so that means it would not be launched until october of '07? that not good

They never had enough money to pay beyond one year for the construction of those satellites. Forget about them they are history.

Why deny 26,000+ customers paying $70-100 monthly for a service already structured, developed, and implemented?

Obviously you don't subscribe to Dish HD. ;) That, or your display totally sucks. :D

Because providing that service cost over $1000 per month per subscriber for the quarter that they ended with 26,000 customers. $70 in for $1000 out is not a working business model. You can't do that month after month and survive.

Please breakdown your $1000.
$ loss for the quarter divided by subscribers divided by months

Probably will be more for the 4th Quarter. That $1 promotion is just asking for trouble. Cost of the receivers, dish and install not being balanced by the return from the customer. Other companies do that, but they have an installed base that is paying the bills to help weather a loss quarter or two.

V* has been losing since day one and has not built up the customer base to cover their new customer aquistion costs. They are even taking a loss on selling their satellite for less that it cost them.

The 4Q figures should be interesting. How many subscribers, how much loss ... encouraging enough that Cablevision voted to sell the satellite and licenses last month.

02.07.05 - Not one call from Distributors to installers regarding Voom.
Not even one of reassurance. Hey, Cablevision is selling the satellite but we are planning to stay in business by ________ fill in the blank. Distributors are being kept in the dark as much as CSRs and customers. That's not news.

Unlike other Sat. Co's Voom is tracking all receivers and will recover them. DTV has lost tons $$.

Voom pays installers $300 for a 1 rec. install ($50 ea. add.)

Keep in mind Voom offered this opp. to 'Home Theater' companies.
Not 'Trunk Slammer' installers.

The majority of customers requesting Voom are RICH.

And recovery for what purpose? To spend MORE money sending Installs Inc out to retrieve them? To refund the price of purchased receivers when the signal stops? (HA!) They need to have something to DO with their receivers to make them worth recovery.

At least that's what they charge their customers, if they don't get a $1 package. And that's were the $1 package really kills V* on costs (other than the cost of the equipment).

But V* does not tap in to their richness for the benefit of the company. $1 installs are not for rich people. Their first installs (Oct 2003) were for rich people (buy the equipment including required installation and get a couple of months of beta service free).

Voomers and late Voomers have probably forgotten the first couple months of service and the trouble RainbowDBS had getting a stable service on the air. But V* certainly charged for the priviledge of being bleeding edge. No $1 deal then!

In any case, there is no requirement to be "rich" to have Voom today. You just have to be able to commit to a monthly service price that doesn't come close to compensating V* for the equipment and install costs.

Can't speak for "rich" people as we're not. But we did buy STB & installation in early Dec. 2003, ended up paying $499 and did not have to pay for service through April 2004.

At this point still enjoying HDTV via VOOM under mostly sunny Seattle skies, Gill
