The List of HD DVD titles

I have updated the list in the first post to reflect the latest announced released dates from Warnrer:

Swordfish - 5/02/2006
Goodfellas - 5/02/2006
Rumor Has It - 5/09/2006 (DVD/HD DVD Combo)
Training Day - 5/09/2006

Its gonna be an HD DVD weekend for me. Netflix delivering last Samuri, Phantom and Apollo 13 today. Yipppeee. I've only seen Serenity. Hard to judge how good this thing is with one flick.

 I just bought Phantom Of The Opera.
I can not see any info on whether this was filmed in High Definition.
It says 1080i but are these HDDVD movies truly High Definition.
I bought a Peter Frampton 480i last year and I know that concert was filmed in High Definition.(It was played on HDNET)
I guess I don't want to pay $25.00 for a DVD if they are only up converted.
Someone educate me.

Just added two more titles to the list. Announced for May 23: Blazing Saddles and The Fugitive.

Looks like there will be a total of six titles released next week. Good!

Almost all movies are usually shot on film, which has a higher resolution then HD, then then are down-converted to what ever resolution they need be in.

Use that Peter Frampton as a example, it was shot with HD Cams, then down-converted from 1080i to 480i on DVD.

Small detial though is that film is also shot at 24 fps which during an action sequence can get a bit blurry. Resoultion isn't the only paramer to look at for example dynamic range would be another not so good thing about film.

Updated the list. Added new titles from Universal Studios to the list:

Ray - 8/8/2006
The Interpreter - 8/22/2006
Spy Game - 8/22/2006
The Bone Collector - 8/22/2006

I not sure this has already been brought up already on this forum.
Anyway I was at Bestbuy the other day and went through their HD-DVD selection and notice that the case mention something about 1080p
I thought HD-DVD player can only handle 1080i and 720P only.
Is the new spec for these players in the work already ?

The HD DVDs are encoded at 1080p but the rocket scientists at Toshiba created a 500 and 800 dollar HD DVD player that cant output HD DVD at 1080p. So for your 500 or 800 bucks you get an incomplete player. Way to go morons.

Don't feel bad about 1080i

nickyct, the difference between 1080i and 1080p outputs is not as important as one might think. For two reasons.

First of all, very few of the current 1080p TV sets can actually accept 1080p signal over any video input.

But the more important reason is that movies are usually shot in 24 frames per second. Current HD DVD players output 1080i, but keep in mind that it is 1080i60 (60 interlaced frames per second). 1080p24 signal is converted to 1080i60 using the process called 3:2 pulldown telecine which essentially preserves all image bits. I am a bit simplifying things but basically 1080i60 contains the same image information as 1080p60, when it is derived from 1080p24. If the TV set does the reverse telecine correctly, there is really no image loss in 1080i vs. 1080p. Again, this is only the case if the source material is in 1080p24, which is the absolute majority of the movies! So, don't feel bad about 1080i. :)
