I have a VIP 622 I recorded 4 hours and 16 minuets of HD movies. I presume they where Mepeg4. They only took 1 hour 47 minutes of my recording time. OTA HD takes up one hour for each hour recorded. Does that mean I can record over 60 hours instead of 30. If every thing I record is Mpeg4?

MPEG-4 is much smaller than MPEG-2. OTA is MPEG-2. The recording time is really based on MPEG-2 time. Dish's MPEG-4 is about 2x as compressed as MPEG-2, so you can usually record 2x as much for the satellite programs.

I think it was "Smith P" who did some analysis of MPEG4-only recordings and yes, ~60 hours was a number I recall.

Technically they are compressed, just not any more than they need to be to fit in the channel by themselves. (Or if they have subchannels, more than that.)
