[VOOM] 24" Dish Question...

M

Michael Norman

Guest
Original poster
I keep reading about the issues using 18" dish versus the 24" dish. And then the issue of trying to get it upgraded.

I have an install on Saturday and want to know if Installs now automatically uses the larger dish or will I need to go through the hassles of requesting an upgrade? I'd obviously prefer not going through the pain as I do live in a rainy and cloudy state - Washington!

What has been everyone's experience for recent installs?

Mike

I was installed just one week ago and have standard 18" dish. Works great
for me so far, but we haven't had any major rain yet.

[VOOM] Re: 24" Dish Question...

Hi Mike,
Yes, request a 24" dish upfront. If you are in the "to upgrade Zip" then it may be
automatic. I'm guessing that all of us living west of the Cascades live in these Zips.
However, definitely check with Install, Inc. and/or your installer. Make sure to call the day
before to confirm your install (the email you receive from Installs, Inc. appears to be
generated by a computer and has little relation to reality.) and make sure your installer
has all your equipment although, hopefully, this is a problem of the past. Oh yes, as
others have posted on here and satelliteguy.us make sure you are up and running with
VOOM and OTA before you sign off on the dotted line. Ask for a copy of the install receipt
as well.

We live in White Center and have had VOOM for a year less 5 days and love it. As noted in
my post above we have had some rain fade. Typical light Seattle rain isn't a problem but
every time a fall/winter storm comes through we lose signal for a short time to several
hours. Suspect when I get home from work tonight that we won't have a signal as a big
storm with heavy rain is already sitting over us. Really depends on what is happening
between us and the top of the Cascades as the sat antenna is just about aimed at Mt
Rainier.

And remember when all else fails post on here or on VOOM Installation on satguys. You'll
be amazed at the knowledge base on these forums. And most of the posters are great
people as well.

Hoping to be watching HDTV (hey, there's always the OTAs!) when I get home, Gill

[VOOM] Geez, Robert, you are usually such a calm, cool guy although when...

it comes to VOOM you have been known to be a "little" passionate!

I believe Voomster is the same guy who posted over on satguys about getting a 24"
antenna upgrade in S.F. area. We on the West coast see the sat at a very (very) low angle
and have to have the sat properly aimed. Wind shaking a poorly installed (loose nuts--
besides us--were found on ours) antenna and/or cable connections that collect water and
short out the signal (happened to us as well) can be a bigger problem out here. Most of
the time we get VOOM sat just fine even in cloudy/rainy Seattle (make sure to tell everyone
you meet that it is dark and gloomy in Seattle all the time--we already have to may
"newcomers") but in these storms lookout.

Still hopeful of wataching HDTV via VOOM tonight under stormy Seattle skies, Gill

Re: [VOOM] Re: 24" Dish Question...

Thanks for the information.

I do hope we are included in the automatic upgrade
area as I really don't want the hassles later.

And thanks for the heads up on what do and check for
come this weekend.

Four days till install...

And as for the weather...can't wait for that expected
wind storm. If the power goes...I don't go to
work...I'm on a well. No power=no water or shower!

Excuses excuses excuses! Always looking for one to
get out of work!

[VOOM] Re: 24" Dish Question... answered

My 18" dish gave me a signal of 84% to 86% in dry weather
My 24" dish gave me a signal of 97% to 99% in dry weather

My 24" dish works a little better in light rain and cloudy weather

If you have rain fade issues ,, post your problems on this support
group and especially the cable guys web site and someone from voom's
executive office scans these sites and may come to your aid and then
Pray Installs Inc is not nothing to do with your upgrade install and
you may have your problem fix, as for me I want the eliptical dish
Voom will have out soon ==> Voomster :)
