[VOOM] california rain fade

Some rain, from the right direction, and heavy enough, will make almost any
satellite signal fade. How heavy a rain did you experience? (not necessarily
disagreeing, just asking)

Wilt, We are having our first rain in northern california. tonight
I had the first drop outs since I first signed up (when it rained).
I called customer service. I did the reboot and unplug. still a
problem. they suggested I try again when not raining. I think we
will need bigger antennae in calif. I will wait and call again, but
seems clear to me. thanks Georg)

I was getting dropouts and signal loss with light sprinkles in Sacramento. Took a a bit of effort on my husband's part, but we were authorized for a 24" (installed Friday) which so far seems to be working so far with light to moderate rain.

I'm on central CA coast and used to lose signal for hours at a time with the 18" dish and little rain.

Now with 24" dish, I lost signal for just 2-3 minutes during a storm a few days ago.

Larger dish is necesssary to avoid West coast rain fade.

Shelly

I am in the Sacramento area as well and am getting complete signal loss in light rain. I called customer service and they scheduled a service call. I guess I will make sure they are planning on brining the 24 inch dish.

[VOOM] Re: california rain fade-Wilt-Thoughts?

Was the 1st time in 200 days that it rained in Los Angeles this last week. It was the first time I experienced rain fade after hearing about it all this time here. Was a hard rain for us up to an inch or more an hour & caused partial to complete loss of the satellite service.

Sounds like the bigger dish fixes this (or at least improves it-now that we are going into our "rainy season").

Thoughts?

Voom my FAIR WEATHER HD SATALITE RECEIVER

I live in the SF Bay Area and we just got rain on Saturday through
the night and I just settled down to watch some HBO HD programming
and the system froze up on me, signal strength normally satalite at
86% to 89 % drop to 56 to 58% in a light but steady rain .. We get
rain from now to about mid April, I guess no HD Voom when it rains
however my ota reception in the rain was still about 98% to 99% I
guess I'm spending about $ 125. a month for ota reception when it
rains. My biggest gripe was the Voom customer support acted like I
was the only one in the world with this unique problem and had to
plug and unplug and reset everything till I lost all my discriptors
which normally ake about 3 to 5 days to get back ill regardless of
Satalite sleep mode and phone line hookup or not. they said they
problem will have me a technician install a larger dish at no charge
but were not sure? I starting to miss Comcast HD cable, while it
was not as perfect as Voom, it worked perfectly with any resets,
unplugs, sleep modes and hours of calls to Voom Customer Service
I love voom, but I feel I'm a paying $ 125.00 a month to be a beta
tester for a HD Sat system no where close to working perfect.

[VOOM] Re: california rain fade-Wilt-Thoughts?

First Rain in Northern California lost all my HD Voom reception
except for a few channels intermittent , ota work well at 98 to 99%
signal strenth -- We get rain for about 6 months of the year

$ 125.00 per month for Fair Weather HD reception is not kool.

Definitely check to make sure they have the dish or will be sending it to you. On the first attempt a few weeks ago the installer didn't bring the dish (Crave was out of them) but still wanted to see the problem. I think my response was something to the effect of "It's not raining right now so you won't". This time they sent the dish to my house.

Your right! The rain was hard enough to whipe out my Directv., but the VOOM came through with flying colors.
