[VOOM] OTA Reception

If I purchase a VOOM receiver and do not activate it,
will I be able to use the receiver(with antennae
purchase) to get Over the Air programming?

Thanks

[VOOM] Re: OTA Reception

Hi Greg,
>From what others have posted particularly on satguys the VOOM STB has

to be authorized for either sat or OTA reception. However, since this
info was from CSRs which are not always up on the correct info
although it was a couple of different ones your guess is as good as
mine. As Robert said let us know if you are able to get OTAs with a
"purchase(d)" receiver. Ours has better PQ than the Samsung we had
before.

I am am about half way from Toledo, Ohio & Detroit, Mi. I am
considering Voom and would like any info on the OTA part of the Voom
system.

[VOOM] Re: Does OTA work

Hey, Louis,

I'd suggest two things to check on your OTA reception. First, check
<antenna web.org> which will give you the scoop on what stations (at
least most of them as they can be a bit behind) are available, where
they are located and what type of antenna you will need. Second,
check our the In Your Area section of satguys which may have other
posters from your area.

You'll get if figured out. When you do sign up under the new deal
you'll be in for more HDTV than you can imagine. We've been enjoying
HDTV via VOOM for over a year. And 6 months before that using a
Samsung STB and a Radio Shack antenna.

[VOOM] Re: Does OTA work

You're probably in great shape. 22 and 33 miles is well within range for most antennas.
Just test your way into it. It may turn out that you need a rotor if you go with a directional
antenna. The rotor will turn the antenna to point where you need it to point. With 2 cities
in opposite directions, this may prove handy. If so, I have and really like the Channel
Master 9521A. It works by remote and can handle 360 degree increments.

Relative to the Voom box itself, I am very happy with how it handles locals. My old D*
equipment would only let me enter up to 2 zip codes at most. But I can pull DTV channels
from 3 different markets. This meant I was always stuck with at least some channels
having no program guide info.

Voom seems to correctly identify every channel. On rare occassions I can get some
channels from a 4th market too, and Voom corrently identifies them as well.

3 last tips: get some overkill in your antenna selection. In other words, if antennaweb
suggests a medium directional, get a large directional. Bigger is pretty much always better.
Mount it outside and as high as you can- higher is always better too. And, if you go with
the rotor, consider a universal remote that will let you program macros for channel
selections. That 9521A rotates your antenna by remote control selections. Using a UR like
the MX-700 from Universal Remote Control with this setup allows 1-click tuning of local
channels. In other words, one button rotates the antenna to an ideal angle and tunes the
Voom box to that channel.

I hope this is helpful

[VOOM] Re: Does OTA work

I live in Lambertville Michigan.
I get all Toledo stations, 11, 13, 24, 36, and pbs.
I do not get ant Detroit stations.
I believe you can choose which MPA mapping you would like, but at
this time you only get one.
This does not mean you can't scan and recieve non mapped digital
station, but you wont get program information.

Originally I was given mapping for Detroit(scince I live in
Michigan), but I work in Toledo, so I had them change it over.

To make things more complicated Voom is worling on multiple mapping.
They are testing it right now.
Check out the Satilliteguys voom forum for details.

[VOOM] Re: Does OTA work

Greg, unless I'm minsunderstanding your post, that's not how the Voom box works for me
at all. Yes you choose your market, but when you manually scan channels it does pick up
those in other markets and does have program guide info (with rare expections). I'm
currently getting channel info for all of my local (Palm Beach, FL) stations, as well as guide
info for some additional channels in Miami, Ft. Myers and Orlando.

In my case at least, it seems like they've alredy got multiple mapping working.

[VOOM] Re: Does OTA work

I am going by what I was told, but hey, looks like I will be going up
on the roof (weather permitting, this is Michigan)this weekend to
point the antenna towards Detroit(45 miles away).

This would be great news for whoever asked the original question then.
It sounds like they are in a better position to get both.

Voom Receiver "unauthorized"

Greg Hoffman said:

will I be able to use the receiver(with antennae

Thanks
The problem I see with this is:
If you are not subscribed, they can't know your address or zip code so you wouldn't have any channels mapped for your area. Unless you are lucky enough to get one that was originally in your area and already has some channels mapped.
It probably won't have a current enough software/firmware already in the receiver to do a scan with. You would have to be authorized to receive the correct downloads.
But, please give it a shot and let us know what you can do with it, if you can do anything.

I think you would still get the sw upgrades. It will scan for channels and list them in the guide. Problem is when a box is deactivated the turn off signal goes to the access card and thats why you get no video. But since locals come through an antenna it should work. One way to test it is on a sub'd receiver, pull the card and see if the locals still work.

Re: [VOOM] OTA Reception

The locals will still work without the card, but if you leave the Satellite
connected the "not authorized" screen will cover up all TV pictures after a
few hours....
The VOOM box is not useable as a long term solution for a set top box.
Maybe a better word would be practical.

[VOOM] Many Installation Questions

I've been lurking on this group and thinking about Voom for over a year. I
finally ordered it last night. Install is set for next week. I have what I
believe will be a somewhat unusual install and have quite a few items that
I'm not sure about.

1st, my household consists of the following: 1 HDTV (Component inputs), 4
SDTV's, and 1 Home Theater PC (running SageTV) hooked up to the HDTV. I
currently have cable. It comes into my basement laundry room, has a
splitter install that connects up to 8 of the 12 or so cable connections
wired from around the house.

I have 3 Voom boxes ordered with the following in mind. I would like one
dedicated to the HDTV, one dedicated to the HTPC, and the last one to feed
the rest of the house. With that known, here are my questions:

1) How many cables will come from the dish into my house? I see that
there are some options of combinding/splitting, but unsure how that works
with 3 boxes.

2) Can one Voom box feed 4 SDTV's? I would like one to just replace the
cable feed for the house. Is this possible?

3) I would like that box to be in the landry room and make this an RF
setup. I have seen someone found some item that turns the Voom remote into
an RF remote. Where can I find something like that?

4) My HTPC is next to my HDTV. Can I have 2 Voom boxes next to each
other? Is it possible to use the remote to change the channel on one
without it changing the other?

5) I want the one box to connect to the HTPC by S-Video. Is a S-Video
cable provided?
Along with that, is an optical digital audio cable provided?

6) What all needs plugged into electricity? I understand the Voom boxes
would, but are there any other parts that need to?

7) I don't have any phone jacks close to where I want the Voom boxes to
be. How much phone cable will be provided? Should I expect the installer
to be able to connect the phone cord to something besides a phone jack?
(like a punchdown panel, etc.)

8) My local FOX and NBC are broadcasting in low power digital low def
signals. The FOX is supposed to turn into a low power high def signal in
the next couple weeks. Both towers are within 10 miles from me, but unknown
if I will receive them. The main things I'm looking forward to in High Def
are the Super Bowl and NASCAR. Both which will be on the FOX channel. Will
this be reason enough to request an upgraded antenna?

Sorry for such a long post. I'm very excited about finally putting the HDTV
to work. I will be grateful for any answers to my questions so that I know
what to expect/get before the installer shows up.

Thanks

Re: [VOOM] Many Installation Questions

It sounds like you are a candidate for a comprehensive structured wiring installation, way beyond a normal install. An 8 way splitter should be an amplified 8 way splitter like you would find at hometech.com in the structured wiring section.
I discourage any kind of combiners or _____ plexers. Run wires for each item. The VOOM dish comes with two outputs, one for each of two receivers. Each VOOM receiver has it's own built-in power supply for the LNB. I think one VOOM reciever will power both outputs. You will probably need triple LNBs for that many receivers. Each VOOM receiver has DVI, Component, S-Video, Composite and Optical (Toslink) as well as RCA stereo audio outs. There is an OTA antenna input as well. One Voom box could feed 4 SD TVs if you want to watch the same channel but the cables would probably be too long to work well.
I don't think a Toslink comes with the VOOM STB. Rat Shack has a bunch or you can pay $70.00 for a 4 footer from Monster but most of their stuff is a little high (if you know how Dr. Noel Lee, the Head Monster, lives).
The VOOM STB needs 110 volts, but that's it for the supplied parts. Of course, you'll need power for the antenna preamp and rotor, but that's on you. Don't think the supplied antenna will solve the OTA challenge unless your stations are in the same direction and fairly close. Where I live, they are in 4 different directions. Go to www.antennaweb.org and see where your stations are.

voom installation

i just had a 3 receiver set up last week, this is what i can tell you. #1 i have 3 cables coming in, 2 satellite 1 antenna. they will want to use a diplexor to combine the satellite and antenna cables, some say this is not a good idea, mine works. the 3 cables will come into your house and connect to a provided multiswitch, there will be 3 cables going out of the multiswitch to supply your 3 receivers. i think you are allowed 150ft of cable for each box. #2 you can probably split the signal to feed 4 tv's...but every tv will have the same channel. i think the rf output would work for this. i think it is located next to the dvi output.#3 not sure about this one. #4 i would think if you had 2 receivers next to one another that the remotes would work both receivers. why not split that signal(use 1 receiver for both set ups and use the other receiver somewhere else)? #5 i think the only cables provided are the rg6, componant and dvi. no s-video or optical. #6 you may need power for an amplifier for your antenna if you happen to need extra power to pick up a good signal. being only 10 miles from the tower that is unlikely.#7 not sure about that one. #8 request an upgrade if necessary. i think you get 2 upgrades a year. if you get much rain you will probably have rain fade..it is a known problem. i've requested and been granted a bigger dish, 24in. i think, they are putting it up next friday. good luck with your install! you will love the voom picture on your hdtv...i do! the standard def tvs look alot better too. now we just need a dvr....hopefully in march.
