"Welcome to a brave new world," was how Chris Berman described
ESPN's Digital Center yesterday afternoon as CT's governor and a
slew of lawmakers gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the 5K-
sq-ft space-age-looking "SportsCenter" studio, which was scheduled
to go live last night in HD at 11pm ET. Indeed, the 120K sq-ft
Center has a technological sophistication that NASA would envy, not
to mention ESPN's competitors and TV engineers around the world
(yes, a delegation of Japanese engineers have already descended on
Bristol to study what arguably is the most sophisticated TV
production facility in the world). But what will the Digital Center
mean to your subs? The tremendous increase in editing speed
should "improve the way we can tell stories," says Bill Lamb, vp
systems engineering. For example, instead of having to tape
highlights of a game and then edit them, highlights will be fed into
servers as media. Editing can begin almost instantly, Lamb says.
(That old SportsCenter promo featuring tape being handed off to
different athletes eventually will be obsolete-there will be no tape
to carry down hallways.) Storytelling will improve as highlights can
be supplemented with slow motion, shading, etc. In addition, a large
room will house 65 production assistants each working at 4- screen
stations (2 TV screens, a computer monitor and an electronic
notebook for logging highlights). The screens could allow PAs to
monitor home and away coverage of a game, for example, adding to the
storytelling, Lamb says. -- While the Center is roughly 25%
finished, the unfinished is also impressive. Next up is a gargantuan
9K-sq-ft studio that will open in Sept and house ESPN's NFL shows.
Rumor is that a small football field will inhabit the room's center
space, allowing plays to be demonstrated in the studio.
