[VOOM] If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

Robert Heitner said:
My only issue with sound is when I go from an HD to an SD. HD sounds awesome
on my sound system but SD sounds like 2 channels std audio.

That's exactly as it is supposed to sound. SD is 2 channel stereo or just mono.

[VOOM] 2 channel vs 5.1

then why, when I had digital cable, did I get 5.1 audio from the channels
when they weren't HD ?

Wilt,

Does the new code also fix the sound dropouts when changing
channels ? The only real issue I have with the box right now is a
lot of times when I change channels I need to go channel up and down
to get the sound to drop in.

Thanks,

Scott

then why, when I had digital cable, did I get 5.1 audio from the channels

I think he was saying most of the SD is in pcm analog, not dolby digital pcm/ac-3. The audio will be in stero unless it is matrixed. I know when I had directv only the movie channels like HBO had DD.

Its a lame marketing concept IMO - but I don't see that much
objectionable about the content itself.

The thing that really chaps me is that we've got the "Spike" channel
for *real* men which has stuff like monster truck rallys and burping
marathons. And we have We and O2 for *real* women which has every
variation of the cheating spouse or terminally ill child tear jerker.
And then we have the gay and lesbian channel which has content that's
designed for people whose IQ is actually greater than their age. Could
we possibly be more pandering to stereotypes? Pretty annoying, but I
don't think this is the porno channel that some imagine it to be. Its
the "Madame Butterfly for gay and lesbian people, because everyone
knows straight people are too stupid to enjoy culture" channel.

Most likely you cable company has its equipment set to send out an 5.1
signal for all its digital output. But if its SD programming, its still
going to be mono or stereo audio, even if its sent out as a 5.1 signal.
There's no "surround left rear" track for Cheers or The Addams Family.

I recently had voom installed and I am not impressed. The SD channels are worse than analog cable. I also lose reception in moderate rain (rainfade). I have a big dish C/Ku Band with 4DTV which gets me the digitals and High Def. Voom has more HD that's true, but I do not know if I can live with the loss of signal in moderate rain and the horrible SD picture quality.

I will continue to evaluate for 2 months, if it does not get better in that time, I have no choice but to remove it.

[VOOM] Re: If you've cancelled VOOM, WHY???

I watched "Pirates of the Caribbean" on Starz last night. It was not
a pleasurable experience. Not because of the movie, but because of
the stutters occurring about once a minute. There were also about 5-
10 audio dropouts that occurred throughout the movie. I purchased
and installed a larger 30" dish to fix the "rain-fade" issue,
however, these stutters and audio drops I can not fix. And I'm
paying close to $90 per month for something that I hardly watch
anymore. If this latest "fix" is still months away, I think I will
cancel and revisit Voom in the fall.

Aye, there's the rub. If you cancel, what will you have to pay in order to come back? I don't think Voom is going to give us free install no commitment again.

I was thinking about signing up to voom because of the HDTV i just purchased, please help me out here.......
Does Voom have the Standard local channels Directv has?
They say the equipment is free, Why is it that it costs 500 bux?
Lastly, Is Voom better than DirectTv or disnetowork for an average non premium subscriber like myself?

Thanks

[VOOM] Re: thinking of signing up

Stuntguy.. depends on your location in my opinion. Seems to me that those
who live in high wooded areas or where there buildings and such in the way,
they complain the most. For those of us who have a direct line of site with
no obstructions are pretty happy campers. I've been VOOMing for about two
weeks and with the exception of not getting ABC yet, I am VERY, VERY, VERY
happy with VOOM and wouldn't trade it for anything. My firefighter friend is
coming over later today to adjust the attenae to get ABC. Short of that, I
get every local station plus all of VOOM's channels.

Install and equipment is ZERO dollars right now. All you pay for is the
rental of the receiver @ 9.5 per month per receiver. So I'm paying $19 + the
VAVAVOOM package of $79.90 + tax.

VOOM is an infant child growing. Lots more to come as time goes on. I
strongly recommend getting VOOM if you have a direct line of site to the
stars, otherwise I'd look into it closer where you live.

Good luck,

I don't get installed for another week, but I'll take a stab:

Does Voom have the Standard local channels Directv has?
Voom does not broadcast any locals via satellite. However, with the free OTA antenna, you will be able to pull all of the free local HD channels without having to pay for or install the antenna yourself like you would with Dish/DirectTV.

They say the equipment is free, Why is it that it costs 500 bux?
I guess I don't understand the question. What costs $500? Are you maybe referring to the purchase option instead of the lease option?

Lastly, Is Voom better than DirectTv or disnetowork for an average non premium subscriber like myself?
It depends what you're looking for. If you want to receive HD channels, then Voom is a great option. If you want more channels in general, not caring much about the HD channels, then it might not be.

Take a look at the channel lineups for the three companies, and you'll answer your own question.

Robert-
Do you have a seperate line coming off of the dish for each STB, or
is the line (signal) split once it gets into your house?

thanks.

The cable from the Sat&OTA go into a diplexer and that has two cables going
into the house... one for each receiver.

Robert
