[VOOM] Olympics Notice that I just received

C

Chris Green

Guest
I just got notice from Voom that NBC has decided to broadcast one-day
delayed highlights of the Olympics in HD. This will replace all of their
normal prime time HD programming. I'm guessing VOOM will not be carrying
any live coverage on any other channels?

Chris Green

To be honest, I'm confused. The way I read the notice, it appears starting
tomorrow we will not be able to watch standard NBC programming on our OTA
digital channel until August 30th. I get 3 NBC stations, 2-1 is the digital
channel (L&O,Tonight Show etc), 2-2 is local tv station coverage and 2-3 is
24X7 weather. If the way I read the annoucement is true, I think I'm going
to be an un-happy camper with NBC.

I understand this to mean if your only nbc feed is the digital one, you are screwed. Here in Cleveland I get 3-1 and 3-2. 3-1 is the digital feed and I expect this will be the HD highlights. 3-2 is the analog version and I hope this will still be regular nbc. Of course, what is the new 321 channel then?

We're emailing sports@msnbc.com to complain - maybe if enough people complain they'll realise what a stupid decision it is.

Let me know if anyone has a better address to write to.

[VOOM] Just sent this to NBC re: Olympics coverage...

My email to NBC:

Hi,

I just received the following from Voom:

"NBC has announced that, for the period of the Summer Olympics (August 13 - 30, 2004), the digital version of their broadcast will be replaced entirely with one-day delayed highlights of Olympic competition in high definition (HD). Consumers who have access to this off-air feed will only see a 6- to 8-hour compilation of highlights and will not be able to view the network's same-day, prime-time coverage of the Olympics or other regularly scheduled programming.

The regular NBC programming schedule will return on August 31, 2004.

Important Notice for VOOM Customers
If you are a VOOM customer who CAN receive the digital signal of NBC via your off-air antenna, the following will apply to your program schedule for the duration of the Olympics:
Your NBC digital off-air will be converted to a special, high-definition broadcast of the 2004 Summer Olympics. You will only receive delayed Olympic highlights in high-definition for the duration of the Olympics. The decision by NBC to make this programming change will cause you to be unable to view live Olympic coverage and regularly scheduled programming from NBC during the Olympics (August 13 - 30). The regular NBC programming schedule will return on August 31, 2004.

If you are a VOOM customer who CANNOT receive the digital signal of NBC via your off-air antenna, there will be no change in your ability to receive the network's programming.
We regret any inconvenience this programming change by NBC may cause you, our valued VOOM customer. We are working closely with NBC to minimize confusion and disruption of this kind in the future. Thank you for your understanding and continued subscription to VOOM.

If you are still uncertain about what your specific situation will be or would like additional information, please go to the VOOM Web site for more information at www.voom.com.

Sincerely,

Tom French
Vice President, Marketing"

If this is true, you are a bunch of flipping idiots!

Live coverage of the Olympics is far more important than HD coverage. I would rather watch live coverage on a 12" B&W television while holding a coat hanger aerial, than watch a delayed, HD compilation of highlights on my 50" TV!

What on earth are you people thinking?!?!

Is this true? Are you ruining the Olympics for Voom subscribers? The Olympics only come along every four years, and now I can't even watch them? NBC sucks...

Please pass this along to the decision makers. Feel free to give 'em a fat lip while you're at it.

Thank you,

Eathan Mertz - Not an NBC fan

[VOOM] Re: Olympics Notice that I just received

Is this even legal by FCC mandate? Wasn't the digital license not
being granted to mirror the analog channel? On sub-channels, they
were free to do what they want, but on the main channel, I believe,
this should be the mirror of the analog broadcast.

Can someone verify this? Or do I think this was the case, but me,
being me, complete wrong?
