[VOOM] strongly considering Voom

Hello all,

I am very interested in switching from my current
provider of Charter Cable to Voom. I have a couple
questions/concerns though:

1) I have read in this group that DVR has been
delayed. Does anyone have an educated guess to when
it will be available? Also, any details on what the
increased price will be for these units? We really
use our current DVR and would not want to be without
one for too long.

2) I live in St. Louis, MO so our local sports is
handled by Fox Sports Midwest, where we get tons of
Cardinal and Blues games. Is Voom even considering
adding regional sports channels? That could really be
a deal killer for me.

3) How is the PQ for SD channels? And do you
experience loss of signal when it rains? Previously I
had Dishnet and we had this issue for almost every
rainstorm.

Thanks in advance for any input. I look forward to
joining the Voom ranks!

HD capable DVR is presently slated for sometime in 2005 (hopefully not too far into it). More HD channels are on the way from VOOM reportedly by March of '05, up to a possible max of 80 in total. No info on possible price for the DVR yet. Fox Sports regionals are not presently a part of VOOM, but it IS a logical expansion for them. Still, their priority is HD content, with SD content as secondary. I lose some signal in strong rainstorms, but in moderate to light I'm okay. I live in Pennsylvania though. Larger dishes have been shown to help with that problem, but there's been a report there would be a cost for upgrading to a 31 inch dish (possibly $60).

Others may have better info for you than me, so please keep up the comments. VOOM IS great for HD programming, no one has caught up with the HD hours of programming VOOM HAD a YEAR ago, much less what they have now.

Good luck to you as you figure out what to do. VOOM is great in my opinion. Come on in, the water is fine.

1. Nobody really knows. Personally I say if you really use your DVR, wait
for the release. There will be multiple changes before then including a
very likely change in dish size/orientation.

2. Can't answer that.

3. Voom SD PQ is awesome. I miss that most of all. Especially now that
they have the two channels I actually watch most, HGTV and Food Network. As
for the Rain Fade, if you had it with the others you may very well have it
with Voom. It is usually caused by pointing through trees/etc which become
hard to get signal through in rain. Voom's dish is small, and is pointed
very low on the horizon. This presents challenges for dish pointing.

The DVR was last said to be release sometime first quarter of 2005. The PQ for SD channels is better than my local cable company and the HD PQ is good. As for rain fade, you will always get with a satellite provider. However, I will loss my satellite channels durning a heavy downpour, but when it steadys out I get my satellite channels back. Also I have no loss durning a steady rain fall on my satellite channels. I don't usually loss signal with my OTA channels, which will be your local channels.

If you do experience a lot of rain fades durning rain events, you can call Voom and they will more than likely upgrade your standard dish, 18-inches, to a 24-inch dish.

Good Luck with your decision and let us know if you make the switch.

Probably 1Q or 1H of 2005, but who knows. I'm getting pretty decent results
with my Tivo, and you can pickup a Tivo for < $100 these days. HD is
downcoverted to SD. There are some tricks to getting locals to work, but
it's not that bad, though I don't record a lot off locals so it's not a big
deal to me.

They have Fox Sports FL as an upgrade. I'd really like to see Fox Sports
South so I can get the Sunday night ACC games! Oh well... But I imagine if
they have FL, they will have the others at some point.

PQ for most SD channels is fine, though this somewhat depends on your TV.
The larger the screen the worse it is for certain channels. A couple
channels, such a Tennis, don't appear to be that good.

Rain faid really is installation dependent. It all depends on the signal
strength you are able to achieve at install time.

[VOOM] Re: strongly considering Voom

I agree rain fade has lots to do with alignment.
I was over a friends house for his VOOM install, the installer really
worked hard to get the strong signal. If you do go for it watch the
installer go through the 7 steps. It says right on your screen the
min level signal for rain fade. Make sure he hits that number or
better. Dont accept less.. My install was over a year ago in NJ and
never loose a signal... Just make sure the installers are not lazy,
it avoids headaches later. I'd rather get a few dirty looks then have
them come back over and over.

Re: [VOOM] Re: strongly considering Voom

I must need the bigger dish then, my signal says 96 but when we had a
small storm come through I could barely watch tv.
