[VOOM] Wega vs. the World

Yes, my Wega LCD is not perfect. I leave the lights on but low, and the
black level, as all the mags have pointed out, is just not there compared to
a CRT or maybe even a Plasma.
But it makes a great first HD set, and it's my first set bigger than a 32"
SD.
It lacks a RGB input for a computer but many higher end video cards have a
DVI output.
It was $2995 at Circuit City, and the Samsung was hundreds more. It was a
toss up between the Hitachi and the Wega, but the Hitachi was a little more
expensive.
I should have waited for the July models, with built-in OTA tuner.
I bet the price would be more expensive though.
Hitachi has a new LCD model that's even thinner using their new light engine
and I'd like to see that.
So the Wega is not perfect. It was just the best value at the time. And I
really like the picture overall. Sharpness is my thing and the Sony is
really sharp for a projection.
When direct LCD sets get larger and cheaper, they will give Plasma and DLP a
run for their money. Lots of Asian companies are gearing up for Direct LCD,
which will replace projection LCD. The price difference will blow out
Plasma, and these sets will be just as thin (probably thinner) than Plasma,
which has some technical problems that time will not heal.
Then TI will reduce the cost of DLP chips so the eventual contest will be
Direct LCD vs. 3 chip DLP. CR and Plasma will be gone, as will LCOS (too
expensive for the differerence).
Place your bets now on the future.

how do you propose to fix the screen when some of those LCD pixels die out? IMO plasma is already beaten price/performance wise by DLP. DLP is 1/2 to 1/3 the price of plasma. Also IMO only a fool would buy LCD where the pixels could fry out.No offense, just my opinion. I own a very inexpensive 47" HD projection set. But I Would put my money on DLP and projection for the tightwads like me. Those are the 2 technologies that i would bet on becoming mainstream, if HD ever becomes that.

[VOOM] Re: Wega vs. the World

Everyone facing a purchase between the CRT and plasma price levels
looks at the LCD and DLP sets and makes his personal choice. I went
with Sony, but I can see why some would prefer the DLP sets. Both
are excellent, we are talking about nuances in the excellent range.
The DLP clearly produced rainbows for me when I scanned from one
corner to the other. I watch alot of soccer. Guess what? My eyes
scan from one end of the set to the other all game long. Probably
would be the case for any other ball sport. Those rainbows would
drive me NUTS. I currently don't have pixels and purchased the set
from Circuit City at a premium along with the warranty--at quite a
premium, $600 I think--to protect against the pixel issue bothering
me within the next 4 years. After that, if I have a problem, I'll
get one of those now reasonably priced LCD sets, because those are
going to be BEAUTIFUL.

Isn't this a VOOM newsgroup anyway?

Hate to burst your bubble... but DLP pixels can also get stuck. Each pixel in a DLP set is just a tiny mirror that moves. So yes they can and do get stuck.

Well that may be true, but I havent seen it in DLP yet. Sure have seen plenty of them Die in LCD technology though. No way Id risk it. I dont own one but Ive watched a friends 50" sammy DLP a few times... didnt see any rainbows.

I'm real happy with our Wega(60"), it has better PQ than the DLP Sammy, not sure about the new version, its impossible to tell at BB. But I've seen both and the LCD looks better to us.

Ours is very bright and can be watched in a fully lit room but thats just normal TV watching, movies we prefer it dark regardless of the TV.

I'm waiting for the true 1080 DLP unit to come out. The new DLP at the store looks really good, but it still doesn't have the res of the Sony.

As far as the Sony DVI, its useless on a computer, its not a standard DVI that I've found any video card or software will correctly display the resolution. The DLP however shows up perfectly.

Either way, the store screwed up and I only paid 2799 for my 60" Sony, and its going for 4K right now so I can get out of it for nothing when something new comes along if I time it right.

Its personal choice, but I have a Panny 60" LCD that has "GREAT" PQ, and all the bells & whistles. It was a toss up between the Wega 60 LCD & the Panasonic, the Panasonic was cheaper as it does not have a built in hd tuner & I didn't care nor need it... DLP does rainbow & more moving parts, more chances of problems... the VOOM HD
programming comes in GREAT, OTA is GREAT and the sound Quality over VOOM is superior to D* or Cable, both of which I also have... If you like your TV thats all that matters, some people, all they do is bitch... even about one dollar.

I love my LCD TV, would recomend to anyone, we tend to see more negative posts than positive because for some people this forum is like the evening news, all they want to see or post is bad news.... I would not have bought a HDTV at this time if it wasn't for VOOM as it offers enought HD programming to make it worth while to have a HDTV, otherwise I would have waited for prices to keep going down. I also have a perfectly good Pro Scan 52" CRT that is 10 years old and still has an OK picture, but night & day next to my Panny LCD, and when the bulb gets dull, just get a new one.. can't do that with Plasma at triple the price....

View on and let the disgrunteled keep bitching, hopefully they'll catch on and start enjoyng life....

Then again, thats only my opinion, I could be wrong....!!!!

[VOOM] Re: Wega vs. the World

I dont see any rainbows on my new DLP.
I liked the Wega but thought it was not working properly returned it
to CC.
My wife hated it she said it was way too big, Sony needs to trim
that baby down. We went for the Sammy because it has a pc input as
well as HDMI for future use. And that same 50" screen is housed in a
sleeker cabinet. I was in BB tonight and the Wega on the floor was
awesome, mine was a dud I think. To each is own lets sit back enjoy
VOOM on whatever type TV we have.... cheers

[VOOM] Re: Wega vs. the World

Neither the DLPs or LCD projection sets are likely to be set up
properly at the store, I found. When I was shopping for my set a
year and half ago when the GWIII came out, the GWIII, though, looked
much better in the store, because the GWIIIs were allegedly set up
better "out of the box." They also released the 42" first, which was
smaller and therefore had a sharper and brighter picture. When I
finally came across a properly set up DLP, I was stunned by the
sharpness of the picture and wondered whether I had made the right
choice. I did the rapid eye movement test from one corner to the
other and immediately spotted the "rainbows." Supposedly, some
people don't see them. Why? I cannot say, but they are there for
people who do, I can assure you and they are distracting. If you
don't see them, the DLP is certainly an excellent choice, as the
picture is without a doubt sharper and appears to be more accurate in
a technical sense. I think there is something to the LCD's colors,
though, they seem more pleasant than the DLPs to the eye. Both are
nearly identical in their excellence, otherwise it would be quite
clear which was superior and that is not the case. Now, those Sharp
LCDs, too expensive at the moment, are going to have us all ditching
the projection sets in 5 years or so. The plasmas are not impressive
at all, both the LCD and DLP sets seem to have a better picture when
viewed at their best angle.
