What is this "Likes thing"

I have noticed I have got a Like on some of my replies. What is that and how do you do it? I see buttons at the bottom of post that let me

Ok thanks if it were a snake it would have bit me. I kept thinking maybe you had to log in with a facebook login or something. I read this site almost daily and have never seen that I guess because it is not in the bar with the rest of the options.
