NEW YORK -- WNBC Wednesday began broadcasting 28 hours of news and local programming in high definition.

WNBC President Frank Comerford made the announcement Tuesday.

The high-definition programming will include regularly scheduled weekday and weekend morning and evening newscasts, as well as the locally produced studio programs "Reel Talk", "NewsForum" and "Mike'd Up".

Coupled with national shows, WNBC will broadcast 72 total hours of HDTV each week.

"Being the first in New York to broadcast in high-definition marks a new era for the station," Comerford said.

In addition to scheduled programming, breaking news, studio-based specials and seasonal programming, such as "Gameday New York" will also air in HD.

WNBC's studio now houses five robotically controlled SONY HD cameras, Comerford said. The station's chopper camera is also HD, and in the coming months, the station will be transitioning all field cameras to a wide-screen format.

WNBC also introduced a new facility that boasts a newly completed control room that includes an HD switcher and audio console, a virtual monitor wall, and has the capability to control any studio located at 30 Rockefeller Center.

Senior Vice President Dan Forman, who assisted the transition, said this makes WNBC's coverage unique among local stations.

"Our foray into HD further enables WNBC to maintain its mission of covering the tri-state area like no one else," Forman said.

Also overseeing the HD project were Matthew Braatz, regional vice president of technology, NBC TV stations; Ken Wilkey, senior vice president, TV stations technology; and Kathy Mosolino, director of operations, WNBC.

"The ability for me and my hardworking team to be pioneers in delivering high-definition television to the New York marketplace will ultimately be a rewarding television experience for us all," Braatz said.
