They want to shut down WWV and WWVH and this is a way to determine if people are really tuning to and using it. Every response to the survey may help to keep it up and running.

"DOD Broadcast and Listener Survey on WWV and WWVH

From 14-24 August, WWV and WWVH will be broadcasting a DOD message at 10 mins past the hour on WWV and 50 mins past the hour on WWVH. As part of the message, all listeners are asked to take a listener survey at the URL specified in the message.

WWV Survey - DoD MARS

The results of this survey are shared with WWV/H personnel to show their NIST chain of command how often their stations are monitored and how the various timing signals and messages are used by the listeners.

Please take a listen to this message and take the survey...as the saying goes, "every vote counts" and your input to this survey is being used to help demonstrate the importance of these stations.

Thanks for your consideration in this effort.

Chief, Army MARS"

Upon reading the thread title, my first impression was that this involved pointing our big dishes at Mars and listening for the WWV signal there. Maybe some day....

I reported that I had multiple devices that used the signal as a reference (including my wristwatch -- AKA "Atomic Time").

I was finally able to pull it in at 15:10 UTC last night and even then it wasn't clear. Propagation must be really bad right now.

Are these devices using WWV, or WWVB? I haven't heard of plans to shut down WWVB, although I don't know how anybody picks it up these days with all the interference on the low-frequency band.

Rumors of WWVB's (and WWV and WWVH) demise have been floating around since a congressional budget proposal to shutter both the Hawaii and Ft. Collins operations leaked out. WWVB is the one that the new Pulse Modulated clocks use.

I’d be err, “perturbed” if several of my clocks suddenly did not keep proper time.

Are newer ones using GPS as the time reference?

Sent from my iPhone using SatelliteGuys App. For now.

I can't think of any consumer models that do. GPS-based units typically (if not exclusively) require an outdoor antenna and that's not a practical requirement for a wall clock or wristwatch. Perhaps not obviously, GPS wristwatches typically can't receive GPS signals indoors.
