XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony

Sharpton singlehandedly got Imus fired by getting his cronies to call up his sponsors and threaten boycotts...

XM overreacted because of the merger... they don't need politicians nixing the deal due to "indecency" issues.... If this had happened last year, they'd still be on air....

If XM has done this because of the fear of losing the merger, I think the proper thing to do is contact our representative's in DC and oppose the merger regardless of how you feel about it.

Well if I was an XM sub I would have been pissed when they went back to free radio yes I understand you hear everything on XM but's what the point of being on Sat radio if you can be heard on FM also... Well this is the nail in the coffin for XM to bad they gave in to pressure from the right wing. So long Imus and O&A..... And like Al Sharpton should talk look at his shady past!!

They can talk to more people with FM and XM. I prefer the new show format over the old XM only show, yhea there are more commercials in the first half, but on the old show they would stay on one topic for 2 or 3 hours. The newer show is more organized in a way.

My two cents,

This is a subscription service, not unlike HBO, Showtime or even Playboy TV. A censored O&A is like paying for a porn channel with the good stuff edited out (haha). If (and I think probably) XM is trying to save the merger, fine. I never understood the merger to start with. Sirius is hemoraging money and is a sinking ship. Just look at their stock price. If the merger doesn't go (and I think the NAB probably won't let it regardless of what XM does with O&A), Sirius will probably go away anyway.

Back to my original point. O&A should not have been suspended. They are on a paid service, on a channel that is labled explicit, and on a channel that can be blocked. I could almost guarantee that 99% of the regular audience of O&A were not offended by their comments. SHOCKED, maybe. They don't call them shock jocks for nothing.

Terrestrial radio is licenced to the broadcaster to use in the public interest by the FCC. Therefore a public outcry can effect what a terrestrial station can or cannot do. Satellite radio is only licenced by the FCC to use satellite transponders to transmit their programming. The content is not regulated by the FCC, in the same way that premium cable TV is not regulated.

This new era of I can't listen to anything offensive, EVEN IF I PAID FOR IT, is getting old.

Geez, If you don't like it. Block it. We don't need a V-chip anymore, the government is becomming our V-chip.

Sirius is more highly valued by investors with a larger market cap (many more shares account for the lower share price).

I bought about $1000 worth of share in both a few years back, but they've issued so many more shares since then that it borders on shareholder abuse....

They gave into pressure from the Right Wing? That is a totally absurb statement.

Rev. Al representing the Right Wing? Get real!

This is not about the "Right Wing" or the "Left Wing". It is about free speech, the corporate lackey's overreacting to special interest groups, and radio comedic license.

Sponsor Pulls Advertising In Support of Opie and Anthony

As of May 15 at 3:30pm EST, we pulled our advertising spots from XM Radio. We pulled our spots from both Radio Disney (Channel 115) and The Virus (Channel 202). We have done this in response to XM Radio's censoring of the Opie and Anthony Show by suspending them for 30 days. It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality. It is also unfortunate that XM Radio executives don't have the guts to stand up for their on air talent.

I have contacted other XM Radio advertisers and have asked them to pull their adverting spots. It appears that many of them already are. Please be advised that spots cannot be pulled overnight. Some are already in the "hopper" and may air for the remainder of the week. Some other sponsors are doing the right thing and are pulling their spots. Please give them time to finish the cycle this week before you actively boycott their products. Thanks for your time.

Adameve.com will stop advertising on XM 202 next week if Opie and Anthony do not return to the channel. In a e-mail to People Against Censorship (P.A.C.) President Debbie Wolf, Libby Lyn of Adameve.com thanked members of P.A.C. for making them aware of the situation. The full e-mail can be read below.

P.A.C. wants to thank Adameve.com for standing behind O&A and asks anyone that agrees with this decision to support Adameve.com in any way possible.

Email from Libby Lynn at Adameve.comto Debbie Wolf at PeopleAgainstCensorship.org

My name is Libby; I work for Adameve.com. I just wanted to let you know that PAC is making a difference.
Today, I received several phone calls from PAC members, asking us to stop advertising on XM202 in light of the recent suspension of Opie & Anthony. After meeting with our marketing team, Adameve.com has decided to cancel our advertisements on XM202 until and unless Opie & Anthony are allowed back on the air.

Our ads should stop airing some time next week, and we will be sending out an official press release on Monday, 5/21/07.

As an adult company with a long history of fighting for our First Amendment rights, freedom of speech issues are extremely important to Adameve.com and our parent company, PHE. We are a proud member of the Free Speech Coalition, and our founder, Phil Harvey, is a vocal and politically active opponent of First Amendment violations.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the many PAC members for taking the time to call and make us aware of this situation. Freedom of speech is worth fighting for at any cost. On behalf of Adameve.com, thank you.

Sincerely,

Libby Lynn

Yep. Everything I've read shows XM to be the weak sister in the proposed merger. If the merger is called off or fails, it is XM that is likely to go under. Then most of their subscribers will move to the remaining satellite radio service.

Of course, a "third" satellite radio company could come into being. Perhaps they would run programs asking for money to keep running programs to ask for .... Err- asking to "support this ministry." Maybe Rev Al could get some backers.

XM may have misjudged and weakened themselves to the point where extinction is inevitable. I'm glad to see a backlash against them.

Explain how XM is the weaker company and the one to go under.

Sirius paid Stern his bonus- he brought in more subs than expected. I've read projections where they could reach profitability. XM has the weaker financials and less likelihood of reaching profitability. They overpaid. for talent that has not brought in the subs. Sirius has grown faster.

ANOTHER XM SPONSOR CANCELS ADS IN SUPPORT OF OPIE AND ANTHONY

Mafialife.com, and online, turn-based computer game, announced on Thursday that they were cancelling their advertising on XM because of the suspension of Opie and Anthony.

People Against Censorship (P.A.C.) would like to express its gratitude to Mafialife.com for taking this stance and hopes that P.A.C. members will support Mafialife.com.

Many people are calling to cancel their XM service yet XM is only "suspending" their radios.

Check this out...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnkdvlhD4w0

The reason for this is that a suspended account is not a cancelled account in their reports. When I worked for the local cable co we were told not to process work orders for disconnects on the last week of the month. A cancelled account is not cancelled untill that work order has been completed.

1 XM Radio Down, 1 to Go

I officially cancelled my 1 XM radio this week and have replaced it with Sirius in my Wrangler.

Once the replacement comes in for my Murano receiver - I'll cancel that one as well.

XM can kiss my ass. And, it's also great to see they have Punjabi answering the phones for them. More off-shore Bullsh!t.

I was going to say I was cancelling it b/c of Opie and Anthony, and then was like, she won't even know who they are.

Well i canceled my 2 radios. They are not coming back to xm after a 30 day suspension its just not going to happen. O and A were the only reason I still had XM. WTF am I supposed to listen to for 30 days. Xms music channels have sucked for over a year. Xm tried to offer me 6 free months to stay, but I figured canceling may get the point across a little better. If they come back Ill reup with a code so I dont have to pay the activation fee. If they dont come back I'll reactivate that monster JVC Sirius unit we got from the deal here. Sirius's music channels were better anyway when we had both services.

SO it looks like I'll be taking my XM units flushing them down the toilet.....

It reeally was justa suspension. i know that we get used to hearing certain things and get upset when they are gone but it is after all just radio.

SUBX1 Boombox PROBLEM (powers down on it's own)

Is my Kenwood XM radio really dead?
