TBS-HD Getting Better

It appears that TBS-HD is at least showing a majority of its movies in HD, as well as its new show "10 items or less." I would have to say its about time to stop putting TBS-HD down. It appears everything available in HD is being shown in HD now. What do you all think?

Dumb and Dumber was on last night and I honestly couldn't tell a difference between the SD version and the HD version.

Yeah the show is horrible, but Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, which is on right now, is HD. I have seen a difference, I remember when TBSHD first came up, the movies were stretched and the picture was terrible. Sure looks better now.

And yes, 10 items or less is horrible as far as a storyline, but its still HD

Ok, you may be right, It looks better to me than it did when it first came up, however it doesnt' look much better than the SD version. I don't know, maybe Digiblur knows the answer, he seems to be all knowing in this area.

However, it doesn't look like complete stretch-o-vision like it used to.

The picture quality is better than the last time I checked TBS and it is not stretched. I may be wrong also, but i think it is zoomed and upconverted like the discovery channels do, which I prefer to stretching.

lol its only a "waste" if its presenting another channel from being put up in its place. I prefer this over nothing at all at the moment. Like I and all people with common sense have said for a while now, THE CONTENT WILL COME! They aren't going to make an additional investment and obtain HD content before they channel is widely distributed.

Ask the Direct folks if all their stations that they have but no one else has yet have much true HD content on them yet.

My original post was wrong, they are not showing true HD, but it still looks better than it did when they stretched everything.

TBS is worse than nothing at all. They have no HD programming and distort the 4:3 programming they do have.

I remember last month when both TNT and TBS simulcast The Longest Yard. TNT gave us HD while TBS ran there stretch-o-vision. How does that make any sense?

That is incorrect. They have space for that channel and others currently as that exact channel and others are uplinked now already. TBS HD is not blocking anyone from getting any HD channel they want. E* is the one not flipping the switch.

Is "My Name is Earl" going to be in HD? I would assume that they have HD versions of every episode. "Everybody Loves Raymond" was broadcast in HD for most of the series, but is not in HD on TBS. Anyone know why?

TBS HD sucks. The only thing I think i've seen in HD other than the baseball playoffs (which looked good) is some awards show in january that was also on TNT at the same exact time. I flipped back and forth btwn TNT and TBS and both looked equally good for that awards show.

I like to watch an episode of Friends every day for a laugh, and have been DVRing the non-HD channel of TBS, as the HD channel looks worse. What the heck is the point of HD looking worse! I know Friends was probably not filmed, and what can you expect from a sitcom episode from the '90s, but augh - totally unwatchable on TBS HD. Guess we're stuck with stretchovision.

That is exactly correct. None of the shows or movies I have seen are HD. Deuce Biaglow was stretched SD. Turner should be ashamed of themselves. If anything is getting better it is TNT. I can't give them the guff I used to. They are actually airing HD these days more often than not. TBS-"HD" sucks.

I saw that, stretch-o-vision all the way. Definitely upconverted from the 4:3 version they show all the time.

Might look fine on your tv - my 92" HD projector screen says otherwise.

Yes, it is not true HD yet, but they are not stretching the movies, Zooming, yes, stretching no. Can't tell you the difference on the TV shows, but I know flipping back and forth on my 60" DLP on a couple of movies last night, the TBS-HD looked better. Regular TBS the color is dulled and seems to just be way to over-compressed.

TBS HD originates in 1080i. All Turner networks are 1080i. So it is either downrezzed or converted to 720p.

My understanding is that Everybody Loves Raymond wasn't available in HD, however, it will be soon... (see below) - I don't think the choice for that was TBS's. Now, if after 3/17, we don't see it in HD, then there would be a reason to complain.

The syndicated Everybody Loves Raymond will be available in High-Definition starting March 17.

That's according to an article by Broadcasting & Cable Magazine.

The sitcom starring Ray Romano has been a ratings hit in syndication following its long run on CBS. The syndicated show is offered to local stations, which can air the 30-minute repeats when they choose.

But although the show is now seen in hundreds of markets, many local stations may opt not to air the high-def version due to a lack of equipment necessary for the broadcast.

In addition, B&C reports that the first three seasons of Raymond were not shot in HD and therefore will have to be remastered for syndicated high-def broadcast.

Everybody Loves Raymond will be the second network sitcom to go high-def in syndication. The first: Two and a Half Men. Game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are also available in syndication in HD.

Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal tells B&C that the high-def switch is landmark.

“I jumped up and down to hear that my little TV show was getting this royal treatment,” says Rosenthal. “I think it will pay off because everyone is getting HDTVs. When I'm watching TV, I look for content in HD, almost whether I'm interested in the show or not. This is the future, and it will be marvelous to have what we worked on preserved in High-Definition.”
