Told by Dish that Hopper can be used with Tailgater...

I was just on Dish's online chat, and had the following exchange:

Sean T (ID: F1F): I checked with my supervisor and you can use the Hopper with the Tailgater and you need to connect it with ID setup.
[Me]: What is ID setup?
Sean T (ID: F1F): I am sorry for the wrong typo, you need to contact the ID verification team.
[Me]: Oh OK, so if I upgrade I can just take the box with me and hook it up to the Tailgater dish when I'm tailgating?
Sean T (ID: F1F): Let me check with my supervisor, please give me a minute.
Sean T (ID: F1F): Thank you for your patience.
Sean T (ID: F1F): I checked with my supervisor and yes once you upgrade with Hopper you can connect with Tailgater.
[Me]: I can't use the Joey with the Tailgater though, right?
Sean T (ID: F1F): Yes, you cannot use only the Joey with the Tailgater.

Can anybody verify this? It's really the only thing holding me back from upgrading, and everything else I've read says that it won't work. I don't want to go ahead and upgrade and then be stuck out in the cold when football season gets here.

It's the opposite of what Scott has confirmed. i.e. Don't upgrade until you hear differently from Scott.

The higher ups at dish keep pounding us with the fact that tailgaters must be on a separate account from the hopper system.

That CSR and his Supervisor should be shot.

You can't use a Joey with a Tailgater it doesn't even have a satellite tuner in it.

That's not what the CSR said. The CSR said you could not use a Joey with a tailgater:

Sean T (ID: F1F): Yes, you cannot use only the Joey with the Tailgater.

They did say you could use a Hopper with a Tailgater, which would be news if true. I'm betting it's a mistake, but at least not impossible.

Isnt the OP already aware that a Joey won't work as a stand alone with the tailgater. I think he's trying to confirm that a hopper with work with the tailgater.

Sent from my iPhone using SatelliteGuys

It looks like the OP is saying that he was told you can use the Hopper with the "tailgater" (dish) but that wont work since only the 211 has the necessary software.

"Yes, you cannot use only the Joey with the Tailgater."
"No, you cannot use only the Joey with the Tailgater."

Yes = No :D

Why wouldn't the Hopper work with the tailgater? After all, it's similar to other HD-DVRs. Does it REQUIRE an internet connection?

The Tailgater is a dumb brick that requires control from a receiver. Heretofore only the 211k had the necessary software to control its movement, etc. It's cheaper than the more upscale version it was based on which has the controlling software built into the sat system.

Here is what was said..

In the first line they were talking about the Hopper... So I took the the last line to mean "Yes you can not use the Hopper, (you can) only use the Tailgater."

Thats the way I read it.

Wow what a load of crap.
What's sad these csrs are giving out mis information all the time.

It's either they really don't have a clue about the system and the installation or they are just hoping to make the sale and get you locked in the 24 commitment.

If you where not a member on the fourms you would have went along with it and then the tech would have had to deal with the issue and potically canceling the order then.

They need to retrain like half of the csr department

Right now the 211 is reportedly the only model that has the software to talk to the tailgater. Not sure what all it is doing, but I imagine enter the zip code to get correct look angles, tell the dish what sat it needs to look at, etc.

There isn't any reason Hopper couldn't do all this if/when the software is written for it, but it has not been reported to be supported...yet.
