No Stanton really takes some excitement out of the HR Derby.

Not all of it, but he'd have definitely hit a few fountain shots.

Yep.... I agree....but it is very important that he comes ASAP if they want the slightest chance to make ANY kind of playoff run.

For all of you who feel Giancarlo's absence will now weaken the excitement of the HR Derby tomorrow night...may I submit for your approval:

MARK TRUMBO of the LOS ANGELES ANGELS

This boy is making Arte second-guess the need to have gotten Albert last Winter. Mark has sent some moonshots out of several AL ballparks this season and is my choice as Underdog Surprise Winner tomorrow night in KC where the balls fly past the fountains with ease on warm summer nights!

OK, the All-Star break is here. Where are we?

The Angels are not where I'd hope they'd be at this point. But with them 3.5-4.0 games back of the Rangers (who have definitely shown weakness this past week) it is not an unreachable task to gain substantial ground on them. And the Angels also have the lead in the AL Wild Card race so all is not totally lost so far.

The Angels' offense has surely come a LONG way from the duldrums of April. These boys can hit them out of the park, bunt guys over and run the hell out of the base paths. I believe we have an MVP/ROY in Mike Trout!!!! Starting pitching issues have suddenly reared their ugly heads, but with Haren resting his back and CJ healing his blister, if we can just find the proper sports counselor to get Santana's head screwed on properly for the rest of the way we'll be just fine. Relief pitching still can make one lose his religion on any given night but we have finally found a closer in which we can build confidence and ride his coat tails from now to as far as things can go.

So, I can rest somewhat easily this week and mentally get away from the daily drag of the game and get ready for "The Dog Days".

GO ANGELS!

And Gio Gonzalez is 12-3... going into this year, he never won more than 15 games.

2 HUGE mistakes the Marlins should have done during the off season... they passed up Carlos Beltran when he was there available and VERY cheap...and making the trade for Gonzalez instead of Buerhle.

Predictions now that the first half is over:

AL Wild Card- Angels over Rays

AL Divisional- Angels over Yankees........Rangers over Tigers

ALCS- Angels over Rangers

NL Wild Card- Pirates over Dodgers

NL Divisional- Giants over Pirates........Reds over Braves

NLCS- Giants over Reds

World Series- Angels over Giants (just like 10 years ago)

Harper is a make-it-happen guy. Those are few and far between. I've seen about half of his games this year in TV and he is worth the price of a ticket, all by himself.

At age 19, he has been better than 2/3rds of this years big leaguers...IMHO.

I'd be careful so far with Harper. I've heard hes got somewhat of an attitude. Maybe its because hes young, he'll get over it.

Yep.... I agree....but it is very important that he comes ASAP if they want the slightest chance to make ANY kind of playoff run.

Now Salsa, as a Mets fan, it pains me to say it, but your right. If your trying to make a playoff run, who cares about the Home Run Derby? What good is the home run derby if your sitting home in October?

I think it will be a two team race between the Rangers and the Angels. The Angels have been playing better. Its funny, I was watching the MLB Pregame on FOX and they were talking about Big Papi and to see where he goes next year. They mentioned the Orioles, Yankees and I believe, the Angels. KCK_Halo, do you think the Angels take a flyer with Big Papi as a DH next year?

And Gio Gonzalez is 12-3... going into this year, he never won more than 15 games.

Salsa, you think the Marlins made mistakes, what about the Mets? They had Beltran and traded him and there were rumors about the Mets getting Gonzalez. I dont know how much truth there was to that rumor but still.

Bill, no Mets in the playoffs??:D Not for nothing, but what about the Red Sox. They seem up and then there down and up and then down again. There not consistant at all. I dont know what wrong with them. They seem to look old very fast and dare I say it, but they seem a little apprehensive against the Yankees. I mean can they stop the Yankees from scoring runs, especially in the first inning??

When your infield is Mauro Gomez, Pedro Ciriaco, Mike Aviles and Nick Punto and your starting pitching sucks, I think that about says it all.

But Gomez and Ciriaco have only 35 at bats between them and have hit a combined .400. In fact, the Red Sox offensive replacements have been so productive that they are nearly tied for the major league lead in runs scored, trailing Texas by only nine runs through 85 games this season.

The Red Sox problem has been pitching. They lost their closer, Bailey, and then their back up closer, Melancon, bombed big time with an ERA of 49.5 (not a misprint!), and since their third choice closer, Bard, was committed to starting, they went with Aceves as closer, who may be the best fourth-choice closer in baseball history but is not championship-team caliber in that role, and using him like that deprived the Red Sox of all the other uses that they made of him last year.

Bard was a failure as a starter, Beckett gets shelled too often, and Lester has had a very un-Lester-like first half that has permanently bumped him off all the historic best-career-won/lost lists. And it is a miracle that Buchholz has the won-lost record he does, since he has had the worst season of any of the pitchers.

Yet in spite of all of that, they are three games out of a wild card spot. About half the major league teams wish they were in that position.

The Red Sox bullpen has been actually pretty good in the first half. Aceves, Atchison, Albers, Miller, Hill, Padilla and Morales may be a bunch of retreads, but statisically speaking they've been quite solid. The starting pitching, OTOH, has been quite wretched!

I have to bone to pick with MLB and their All Star game/rules.

I think that the rule that EVERY TEAM needs to be represented in the All Star game is fair...especially if the host team/city has not given you All-Star monsters in the recent years. With that being said, WHY was Giancarlo Staton not replaced WITH A MARLIN? I LOVE Harper...attitude and all(this subject is for another post)...BUT, a Marlin should have replaced him. NOW, whether the rule is stupid or not...the Marlins have NO representation at the All Star game. Now, some down here, because the Marlins have played terrible, have stated they do not deserve one. I think the team's MVP has been Justin Ruggiano. A kid that is hitting .390 in 31 games with 6 HRs, 17 RBIs, .756 SLG and 1.214 OPS. He MORE than deserves to be on as the "other" lone representative for the Marlins.

17 days until training camp, than only will the seamheads and geriatrics will give a crap about the Red Sox. Oh and obviously the guy living in LA talking with the "Bosstin" accent.;)

Since the signing of Lackey the team has become the laughing stock in the Boston sports lexicon.

Bob Kraft and Wyc Grousbeck have for the most part been liked in the area, but I'd never thought I'd see the day were Jeremy Jacobs was liked more than John Henry.

Age shouldn't matter. Here is his stats compared to Jay Bruce.

2012 CIN 83 297 74 20 1 18 56 47 34 76 5 0 .249 .326 .505 .831
