Will I have a problem getting Free HD Locals???

I just bought a 42 inch Samsung 4253 HD Plasma Tv
As of now I have hooked up a Dish 311 receiver that I got from Radio shack for $100.
Now I am thinking of getting a Dish VIP211 HD Receiver for my new plasma hdtv.
Now what would I do,Disconect it and hook up the New receiver and tell them that I just upgraded to a New receiver?
I don't see a problem with that I would think......
But Since I am getting NYC Locals will the VIP211 pickup whatever HD locals are from NYC OR will I have to pay for them in another package or something?
Or is it best just to keep the Radio shack 311 hooked up?Thanks alllll.JohnnyT

hd locals are in the same package as sd locals, so no they are not extra.

but you'll need a second dish that looks at 61.5 if you don't already have that from the days when there were nyc sd locals over there

NY sd locals are on 119, the HD locals are on 61.5. If you are upgrading to the 211 and want other HD channels as well, they are split on 110 and 61.5. If you do not upgrade to an HD package, there is an additional $6 HD access charge.

You'll need to either install a dish at the 61.5 or 129 to recieve the HD programming.

If your TV has a HD Tuner built in, by all means get a good exterior HD Off air antenna and keep the 311, HD locals for free? Oh yeah....... :up

Yea I would think getting a good outside antenna would help...
I had a Good winegard UHF antenna a few years ago and just pickedup a few
SD Locals with lots of snow on the from 50 miles away in the Poconos...
Radioshack says you cannot pick up anything in my area,and also Antenna.org says that there are SD stations CBS,NBC,ABC and says that there are NO HD stations in my area......
I thought maybe getting the best antenna would help abit.......JT

What if I already have 2 dishes (for American and Int'l programming). Currently I have 211. What if I take it off and my TV has built-in HD tuner. Would I be able to get HD locals without the 211 receiver as well?

If you can pick them up with an antenna connected to your 211 it should work the same on your tv's digital tuner.

Alright tried it. My TVs tuner did not pick up any digital channels when i connected the cable into its uhf/vhf input. Could the local channels be encrypted by dish?

You can't just plug the satellite cable directly into the RF input of your tv. You can install a set diplexers to put OTA and satellite over the same cable run, but you need a separate OTA antenna at the end of the run.

What he said if your connecting the dish directly to the tv, if you connected an antenna make sure you did a scan for digital channels as some sets do not allow direct tuning of digital channels without scanning first.

Let me understand this. Dish cable gets both satellite channels and OTA using the two satellites into single cable. That cable goes into the back of the 211 receiver, which then gets both top 60/120 programming and digital locals. If I take that cable out from dish receiver and plug into my TV which has a digital tuner..why would it not read the digital channels from it? I thought that the diplexer was needed if I wanted to send the dish feed into both dish receiver and my tv. Or is my understanding incorrect?

you need an ota antenna to get ota channels.

dish hd locals come on the proper satellite and can be viewed on your 211 receiver

I apologize in advance, and I hate to sound condescending, but it's hard to believe somebody could get to >130 posts here at SatelliteGuys.US without understanding the difference between a satellite feed and RF signal.

The satellite feed will get you channels from the satellite when hooked to the appropriate receiver. Some of those happen to be "HD Locals" but they are satellite channels just like the rest of them.

The RF feed from an antenna will get you analog or digital TV channels when hooked to the antenna input of a compatible device (receiver, TV, etc).
