Newyork Times Review On The Ps3 Versus The Xbox 360

i agree that it stinks, but one cannot compare a console that has been out a year to one that has been out for 5 days. its not a fair comparison at all.

I don't know if its completely unfair. The guy doing the review may only have a new 360 to compare it to and may not have used one when it came out. I mean thats its competition whether its been out a month or a year thats what it is competing against just like when the xbox came out it was competing with a PS2 that had been out for at least a year and a half. It may be unfair to compare PS3 1st gen games to 360 2nd gen games that I would agree with since programs have had more time to work over the 360 dev tools, but as far as the interface goes sony had plenty of time to work on that.

I think the one thing the article doesn't point out at all is some of the advantages the PS3 does have over the 360. For instance the use of any blue tooth headset is nice. The 360 wireless headset sucks so much so I took mine back.

i never said it didnt but its BS when people dont give out the facts

Like what? Cut the BS, pls - you're claiming it's unfair to compair it to its current competitors and that's just downright hilarious. PS3 is already competing against the rest of the bunch NOW, it's absolutely fair to compare it as it is, moreover this is the only review that makes sense whatsoever.

does anyone here realize that the 360 out of the box could not do MANY MANY of the things it can do now. A lot of people did not have a launch console like I did and got a post launch console with the newest firmware and do not realize the 360 had many of the same flaws the PS3 does now. SO DONT TRY TO FEED THAT BS TO ME and its wrong to try to give that misconstrued info to the public

Hello? Pot? This is Kettle.... you're black.

Weren't we just recently slamming Sony for disingenuous comparisons? Part of the game. Useful for a few impassioned bloggers' rants, and that's about it.

A few differences......

BluRay transfers data more slowly so longer lead times..... http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/04/ps3-to-load-games-slower-than-the-xbox-360/

Thanks to a scarcity of BluRay diodes, supply will be constrained (fatally? who knows?) http://www.ps3land.com/article-633.php

Cell is harder to program for per developers (http://money.cnn.com/blogs/browser/2006/06/playstation-3-slow-hard-to-program.html )

There is even talk that the company itself is in deep trouble... http://ps3.ign.com/articles/722/722923p1.html

Hpman, I always relish our little point/counterpoint debates here, and we both are guilty of slamming the other guy and backing our own team of choice. They BOTH made mistakes, they both had launch challenges, and they both have long term ramifications due to the design choices they made as well as the standards they wished to champion. I personally feel that MS will eke out a victory here and capture the #1 market share. That would be a huge turnabout vs. Sony's 30 Million plus consoles which took the lion's share of the market in the previous generation.

If anything, I think that both of us may get surprised as the bargain basement Nintendo steals back the thunder with some gimmicks and solid games, to pass both of us as price sensitive parents veto shelling out $400 - $700 for our systems of choice....

But as always, I love the spirited debate, but had to call you out on the mock indignation for Sony's foes being less than forthright, when Sony has been guilty of the same tactics in the past year....

Heres my question, will the PS3 catch up? If the 360 has been out for a year and has these advantages over the PS3 becasue its been out for a year , if sony catches up with what they can offer in a year to match that of the 360 . In another year wont the 360 be ahead by aother year, so will it ever catch up?

One should EXPECT an newly released CE device to be more advanced than an older one. Why is that hard to understand?

My 2006 XBR1 is better than my 2001 XBR800
My 2007 Tahoe is better than the 1998 Tahoe I just sold
The Sony PS3 is better than the XBOX360....................right?

Okay...so its not....but lets be clear that the comparison is very fair

Depends what you're talking about. There are only many features they can cramp into these boxes and in terms of sale it could be very well the case because a 6-8 million headstart advantage is a LOT to overcome, especially with Sony's mfr'ing problems, costs and financial pains.

Aww, it'ss so boring to always read and correct your utterly clueless BS, Joe - by last month - for your mind only: October - over 6 millions Xbox 360 has been shipped. In 11 month, Joe (sorry, I really understand that you are having problem to calculate the number of months from November to October but I had to correct this.)

Shipped is NOT sold. There are hundreds of thousands XBOX360s setting in Gamestop/EBs, BestBuy, Circuit City, Sams, Walmart, anywhere they sell video systems and games. And besides, I am only talking about the US market and not worldwide. We are only talking about 5 days since launch. Besides, why do you care. You don't like consoles. You have stated that many times before. Why do you even post if you don't like consoles?

And besides, I am only talking about the US market and not worldwide.

Don't you think it is bit dishonest to use an exaggerated world wide figure for PS3s if you are "only talking about the US market" when it comes to 360s?

Another note -- BestBuy offered an XBOX360 a $50 gift card and a free game to those who did not get to buy a PS3. At two BestBuys they got no (that's right - none) takers on this offer. Seems that there were individuals who actually wanted a PS3. Now wheather they wanted a PS3 to sell or wanted one for themselves is something that is definately a question that could be easily debated. Either way, folks want the PS3.

No one denys that there are people that want PS3 and PS3's only. Its understandable as brand loyality is a very big driving force. Especially if the PS3 has an exclusive game you play.

Bob, nobody is saying that Sony is perfect -- please Bob be reasonable. And surely you don't think M$ hasn't lied or misled its consumers do you? There seems to be alot of heavy artillery headed for Sony's head and much of it is deserved. They decided to make the PS3 more then a game machine. They decided to take the PS3 in a direction ahead of the PC market.

The CELL design is not only differant than a normal x86 design CPU but programing is also differant. So you think that when the first dual x86 chips came out that the programers jumped right aboard? Heck, come Bob, name me 10 64-bit programs on the market right now? We will never advance technology till we try something new.

So lets try this out. Sony says you need BluRay, you need wireless Wi-Fi, you need BluTooth, you need HDMI, You need 1080p for gaming, you need wireless controllers, you need a bigger harddrive (60gb) (and you can install a bigger drive by yourself-- easily), you need a web browser.

M$ says you don't need BluRay -- they charge you $200 for an HD-DVD drive. You don't need wireless Wi-Fi -- they charge you another $100. You don't need BluTooth -- they charge you for the batteries for your wireless controller --- $39.00 each plus the adaptor? You don't need HDMI -- they don't care if you can or want to hear the new Lossless Audio Codecs. You can not possibly do 1080p for gaming nor is it possible -- however with there lastest download you can now do 1080p thru the VGA? I don't now of any tvs that do 1080p thru the componet -- please list them as I have asked before! You don't even need a Harddrive- core does not have one -- oh yeah, you can buy a 20gb M$ harddrive for $100! Gee how much is M$ going to ask for the new 120gb drive? No one is going to want to go anywhere else but live (cost $50 a year) but there will be a browser in a future download soon!

Bob, Sony has made many mistakes and they are now paying for it. They have released limited supply of PS3s to the market. As I have said before, if they do not continue to ship PS3s then they are going to lose a very big market and possibly a new one. I still believe that some heads will roll after the European launch next spring at Sony and they should. But what I think Hpman was stating is that the M$ lauch did not go smoothly at all. They encounter their own problems and they are still correcting them today a year later. How about so slack for Sony. If they are going to hang themselves let them, I don't think that will happen knowing how the Japanese government will not let a Japanese company go under (Sony is no where near that -- no matter who says what. But Sony is not the only company having problems right now. Anyone here using Vista?

I understand that Sony shipped way short of 400,000 units to North America. While no exact numbers are being listed -- the number I keep hearing is 275,000 here in the US. I don't know what Canada got but the 275,000 is for the US. I also hear another 80,000 by December the 1st. So, I will stand correct on that number Sapient, still 275,000 is not a bad start. Lets see what Sony can do by the end of the year. Another 300,000 would be nice -- still don't know if that is possible but I first heard 1 to 2 shipments by the end of the year and now I am hearing as many as 6 -- so who knows. Only 5 more weeks and we will know for sure.:)

Yeah, that's the difference between having something in stock and having only promises in stock. In other words it's been shipped because of the demand. Supply and demand, if you ever heard about this, Joe - BB, CC, GS wouldn't order over 6 million in 11 months if there wouldn't be a demand for it.

It's elementary logic, you know, Joe...

And besides, I am only talking about the US market and not worldwide.

Except when you're talking about PS3, right? Then you take the worlwide and double it and compare it to US-only 360 numbers and then downplay it.

We are only talking about 5 days since launch. Besides, why do you care. You don't like consoles. You have stated that many times before. Why do you even post if you don't like consoles?

Because I hate to read your ignorant, false BS everywhere, Joe.

BTW I just got a Wii, didn't you read it in the other topic? :p

Awww, these old, boring BSing... "keep hearing"... the voices inside your head, Joe? :D

I linked Gamasutra and they estimated less than 200k.

I don't know what Canada got but the 275,000 is for the US.

No, it's not. It's 150-200k.

I also hear another 80,000 by December the 1st.

I also hear that you are often high on acid... :D

So, I will stand correct on that number Sapient, still 275,000 is not a bad start.

:D :D :D

ROFLMAO!

Take another pill, Joe.... voices are making you crazy...

-- so who knows. Only 5 more weeks and we will know for sure.:)

No, we won't - Sony will be in utter silence because they won't be able to ship anywhere close to their laughable promises.

using your example, will you agree with this. 30 Million BD disks have been shipped and 60K are being made daily. They must be demanded huh.

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/061120/nym001.html?.v=62

I think you mean 3, not 30, million. It should be noted, however, that these were not mastered discs that have been shipped to vendors to fill consumer demand. These are discs that have been shipped to who ever does the mastering to fill predicted consumer demand.

Orders for the 360 are ro refill emptied shelf space in stores. This is not really true yet for BD.

Even if it is that high, it is a terrible start. Granted, they will be able to sell far more than that, but it is hard to imagine a launch with smaller numbers. Frankly, if they knew they would have so few to sell at this point, they probably would have put it off another month just to save themselves the bad press.

DO you actually read you own links?

"the company has nine 25 GB Blu-ray Disc production machines in operation and has shipped over three million Blu-ray Discs for a client base of over 35 customers since beginning production in May of this year."

In other words it's just another irrelevant, ignorant post...

Let's all be friends

Why is it that we can't all be friends!!! EVERY F*&*&in article that comes up in this forum T2K and Joe Sp have to ruin it with their exotic arguments. YES guys, you are extremely intelligent, but you do have generic people like myself that want generic knowledge. NOT high tech beyond realm (who gives a sheets) that you always fight about.

It's hard to get the information that is needed with 37 posts on a single issue and (25) of the posts are 2 men fighting.

I am not being a jerk about this, just asking for some tact.

To your points:

I don't need or want a wireless connection. My wired connection works fine with no latency when the missus turns the microwave oven or cordless phone on. plus since I have 30 MB downstream speed and 1.5 upstream, you'll always see the quality of my connection pegged at max when you see MadDog Murdoch online...

I don't NEED a hi def disc format. I prefer faster loading times. I did indeed buy the HD DVD player because I like the better picture, but there are MANY others that could care less about it at this point.

Yes, both sides hammer away at whatever supposed weaknesses there are, or that they can infer. Sony says no HDMI cable means no 1080p for most. Meanwhile, Sony isn't even INCLUDING an HD cable in their system package (this I heard referenced in another thread... I dunno if this is accurate).

Charging for batteries? If you want to use regular alkalines you're covered. If you want to get rechargeables, they are available, ditto for the docking station. It's all about choice to me. I don't want the wireless adapter so I don't have to pay for it. I want the rechargeables so I do. etc.

Hey, you love your choice, fair enough. I love mine. Someone shreds my system of choice, I'll counterpunch back, just as hpman and you are doing for Sony. We both seem to be fighting to convince the undecideds. If your system fails to excite casual users and mine does, more games and services will naturally float to mine vs. yours, so I understand the urgency. Just don't raise your blood pressure over this. Most users don't even have them hooked up to HDTVs yet, much less 1080p. In game surround sound and HDTV capability hooked me to the original Xbox. Now the Arcade and the Marketplace have cemented my loyalty to the 360 as they are both functioning extremely well for me.

Enjoy your systems. Feel free to trumpet your system's advantages as will I. Just don't get angry about it. Something for everyone here. Enjoy your holidays....
