Questions about the upcoming new MPEG4 HDPVR

The latest estimate for the HD DVR is now mid '06 and the HMC is probably going to arrive first.

DirecTV poised to take on TiVo

Why would you need those swapped? The only real swap question has to do with HD boxes needing to be MPEG4 capable.

Tanberg TV get's another D* contract

Nobody has seen even a hint of MPEG4 receivers yet. There are too many people poking around and I'm sure a pic or a few details would have leaked if they existed even in beta level.

Tanberg TV get's another D* contract

Doesn't really matter who is supplying the hardware. It's still MPEG4 compliant and compression is tweaked regardless of who's hardware you're running it across. It's not the tool. It's how you use it.

Tanberg TV get's another D* contract

Like they have a choice? Cable and the RBOCs are coming on like a freight train. If they don't get off their butts and get after the HD rollouts, they'll be placing catch up indefinitely. Does this say anything indirectly about the release status of MPEG4 receivers? Hard to tell.

    WiFi device for wireless TV

No hardware on the market yet that supports streaming TV with the necessary QoS. If you have any other traffic on the network, you'll have loads of problems. You'll want to watch for 802.11n specific hardware or wait for the ultra-wideband stuff next year(802.15a).

Your scenario would make sense if this was a revenue sharing deal where the number of subs dictates how much money the NFL receives in the end. That's not the way this one is structured. D* pays $3.5 B for the rights to Sunday ticket through 2010. It doesn't matter if they have a million people...

Any chance D* will pick up OLN HD? Possibly bad news for NHL fans...

The NFL deal with D* is not a revenue sharing deal, so I'm not sure why they would care. The cost to D* is set and the ink is dry.

Looks like an out to me. Now no reason not to buy if you're an HD Tivo fan.

    $299 HD-DVR w/ $100 rebate

The "switchout" isn't expected until late next year. New subs will get the new boxes first, and existing subs later. That per the CEO. HD DVR not due before early to mid '06 in any event. Price point coming down and almost compelling, but the 2 yr is a deal killer. Can you be released from...

Saturday dropoff doesn't get you Monday delivery. Sorry. I have a FedEx account. And if you're getting overnight delivery of that size box for $14.95, I want the name of that account rep!

    $299 HD-DVR w/ $100 rebate

Access cards fit in a 37 cent envelope. It's a little different deal for a DVR.

So you call on the 13th, a Saturday, and they'll have your box on your porch on Monday? Neat trick.

We just received our 1st r15 dvr

The STi5528 is a MPEG2 decoder set. There's no need for MPEG4 in this box.
