Restart receiver to receive new HD channels?

When you reboot the receiver re-reads all the channel mapping. (That's what the "receiving satellite data" wait is all about). Apparently, for whatever reason, your receiver must have "missed" the channel having been added, rebooting forced it to re-download the channel mapping and fixed the...

    Are any channels MPEG2 only?

Actually, NONE of the existing national HD channels got an MPEG4 "mirror". Channels that already existed like HBOHD, ESPNHD, etc. simply got an additionall channel mapping to the MPEG2 version. This has been discussed in several threads. It is the general understanding that these channels...

    HD Channels are Launched

Before I headed out for work I only took the time to look at a few channels that we didn't have before (e. g. CNN, Weather, National Geographic, Animal Planet...) However, several people are now reporting over in DBSTalk that the channels that we've had for sometime "in the 70's" are simply...

Hmm.... Indeed. Thanks for the correction.

    What we are hearing...

It's all semantics. And methinks you're splitting hairs. And how the F*** does that pertain to the question I was answering, anyway? I'm and RF engineer. I know what IF means. I know how the LNB works and what it does. The question asked, which I answered, is how the D* receivers...

Special Test Channels 9300 and 9301: Tonight!!! 9/22/2007 at 10pm PT

Oh crap! I missed the party! :( (Didn't see this thread or the similar one at DBSTalk until after the test was over. :( )

    What we are hearing...

Exactly what I said. In fact you quoted me saying that the A-Band and B-Band refer to chunks of the "IF Downlink frequencies". Re-read what you actually quoted! ;) and... Click on the link in my post above.

    What we are hearing...

I am abundantly aware of that. I design satellite uplink systems for a living. I was specifically describing how the DirecTV LNBF's block convert the entire Ka band into two seperate (and quite frequency diverse) downlink IF frequencies, which they call "A-Band" and "B-Band". IOW, I'm...

Will I need to reset my receiver to get the new channels?

It will not need an uptate. The last several revs of firmware have been capable of seeing all the transponder frequencies D* has any plans to use in the forseeable future. No updates, nor reboots should be necessary to see the new channels. They'll just "appear" in the guide. If you're...

    What we are hearing...

For the 103 slot, it has seperate pages for Ka/A-Band and Ka/B-Band. 32 transponder slots on each, for a total of 64. However, the frequencies that D* does not have licenses for are flagged "N/A". Here's a PDF whitepaper from Zinwell that describes the DirecTV stacking plan. Note how they...

    What we are hearing...

That would totally fit with their claims of capacity for "over 100" national HD channels ultimately. If they have 16 CONUS TP at 103 and another 16 at 99 after D11 is operational, that will be capacity for 128 national HD channels total from 103 and 99. But..... Aren't there potentially...

    An Update

I agree with you. The only way I can see them getting the message to the "target audience" and not alarming people who don't need to be alarmed would be to participate in this forum and others like it. That participation is something I've always wanted to see. Now would be as good a time...

    An Update

Well said, and I generally agree with this. However, at the risk of being called an "appologist" or worse, I think I can see what D*'s motivation is for their lack of comment on this issue. It's probably true that about 1% of their subscriber base has any clue whatsoever that anything was...

    OK, where'd the locals go???

It looks like 119 lost all its spots for awhile, but did not lose its CONUS beams. Now the $1,000,000 question: Was this glitch in any way related to the problems they've been having getting the HD channels going at 103(b). ;)

Will I need to reset my receiver to get the new channels?

A reset should not be necessary. If your guide is set to "channels I receive" they'll be there. If you're using a "custom favorites" list, you'll have to edit the list to add them. But again, no reset should be necessary.
