    Backing up your recordings

faster imaging I took the SATA drives out of the USB enclosures and used TrueImage disk clone to do a block by block copy - it took about 3 hours to complete 1 1T drive to another

    Backing up your recordings

Oh - OK, I think I understand what you are doing now. For me that wouldn't work too well. I have around 300 shows recorded that I want backed up. Doing that one at a time would be too cumbersome. But I can see for doing a few shows that would be a good way to do it without all the complications...

    Backing up your recordings

Hi DefDude - I had a look at your previous post but I don't get it. My internal drive is much smaller than my external. That's the point of the external drive - I want to save LOTS of programs. And I want backups outside of the Dish box environment for safe keeping. I don't see that your method...

    Backing up your recordings

Yikes! I just started a TrueImage disk clone to see how long that might take to backup my 1T drive. It has been running for 30 minutes and the progress bar hadn't come off the left side yet. It just bumped up and now it is estimating 17 hours to compete! That's way to slow! I guess I'll stop...

    Backing up your recordings

I have a 722, don't know if it gets upset plugging/unplugging. But my opinion is that drives left powered up and spinning will last longer than drives that are frequently power-cycled as long as they are kept cool and vibration-free. I harp about cooling a lot! But storage devices is my life as...

    Backing up your recordings

oh no! Having that happen to me a couple of times is what started me on this quest. Good thing you have the setup to get things restored! I was going to wait until the weekend to do a full backup of my 1T drive - now I think I'll just go ahead and do that right now! I think while I'm doing it...

I was very surprised to see that too.

    Backing up your recordings

Woo-Hoo! Success! I took my 500G drive, with about 400G of programs, off the Dish box. Then plugged in a 1TB drive (with better cooling!) to the Dish box, and let the Dish initialize it. Then took both drives, plugged them into an Intel computer, and booted up using a Knoppix Linux CD. Both...

    Backing up your recordings

Sounds very easy. I think I'll try making an archive same-size backup first, then maybe try a larger drive. I wonder if using Linux to create the same type of filesystem, then copying the files from the smaller drive would work? Probably not. Or maybe use the Dish box to initialize the bigger...

    Backing up your recordings

I have several of these for work - my company makes disk drive test tools - if you use this without a BIG fan constantly blowing across the drive I guarantee your drives will be dying in no time at all! Newer drives run HOT - and this attachment provides zero cooling. Also, the SATA connector...

    Backing up your recordings

Sure, or multiple 1T or greater drives! The big problem with multiple drives is for my family's use. Changing drives, swapping cables, powering up and down, keeping track of what programs are on which drives - too big of a challenge. So - big drives, with everything online, no swapping cables...

    Backing up your recordings

How exactly do you do it? Do you use dd? Can you spell out the exact steps you do for both directions? Then, is it possible to copy things to a bigger disk and have the new extra space visible to the Dish receiver? I have an almost-full 500G drive - it would be wonderful if I could copy...

    Backing up USB drive?

I haven't gotten to try it yet. I thought I had another drive to back up to but it's in use. So I've got to get another one in. Probably be end of the week.

    Backing up USB drive?

I'll give them both a try tomorrow. Loosing all that stuff accumulated for so long would be a terrible drag.

    Backing up USB drive?

I had a scare today - my 722 suddenly said my external USB drive had been used on a different receiver (no - I only have one receiver) and said if I wanted to continue I would lose all programs on it! I rebooted the 722, no good. I powered off the USB drive for a few minutes and everything came...
