Yes, you can. I originally use the 522 RCA jacks to connect to my receiver and now use the optical output. You will probably want to disable your TV's speakers which means you will have to have the 522, TV, and amplifier all on to hear sound.

I had recorded a DD 5.1 movie and was playing it back on TV2 using the RCA jacks. The TV1 audio goes through an optical cable to an A/V receiver but all of that stuff was off during playback. After more than an hour of playback, the sound got out of sync by almost a second with the picture...
