The Hopper Plus never updated on it's own from experience, I always had to check for updates from the Hopper Plus's Device Preferences in order to update. It still does not use the downloaded ATV files. The Hopper 3 does auto update but it's still slower than manually doing it.

As of the time of this writing, these are the latest software versions for the following Android TV (ATV) devices: Joey 4 - P54701 Wireless Joey 4 - P64701 Hopper Plus - P14701

Yes, downloading is possible with Settings -> Diagnostics -> Tools under the Receiver section -> Technician Settings -> Download ATV Files but how does one actually install the downloaded files is the question.

It's 18.49 on You Tube TV also or 184.99 if you want to pay by year. That would be stupid though. If that idiot from Paramount buys them he has said he wants to shut the HBO app down. He probably would shut the live HBO channels also.

Thank You for the post. I am at a loss to understand why Directv is so reluctant to advertise what is a great feature and value to their subscribers. My fear is that they tread lightly because more 4K viewers could negatively impact the advertising revenue for the greed driven local stations.
