DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

According to D15/D16's original documents it was designed to power a lot of transponders at once. I can't remember the number, but powering all 32 Ku tpns is well within its capability. It would still have the capacity to light up some of its Ka transponders, if they had any dishes out there...

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

I wonder if the FCC is getting pressure from Dish to free up those transponder slots since Directv is no longer using them. They can provide a signal the US dishes can receive for a bit, then go back to an inclined orbit, then re-orient it again every time Dish complains. I mean honestly, the...

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

After it happens please check back with us and let us know how many customers you had to upgrade because despite all the warnings from Directv they were still caught out by it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious about how many SD customers remain!

    Real DirecTV Subscriber numbers

You think YTTV doesn't have any infrastructure costs? Directv's infrastructure costs don't scale with subscribers - it doesn't cost them anything to serve one additional customer. They are broadcasting a signal into your backyard whether or not you have a dish up to receive it. But even though...

    D11 outage 2/27/2024 (Resolved on 2/28)

They'd also have to replace all the HR34/H44/HR44 out there.

    D11 outage 2/27/2024 (Resolved on 2/28)

D11 & D12 have identical spot beam configurations, so worst case if one of them completely failed I suppose they could double up the channels on every beam. That would mean halving the bit rate for each channel, so quality would take a hit, but MPEG4 compressors have improved since those...

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

Is ECUF still in use? Maybe if there are some LRFs that are dependent on it (i.e. they have fiber links only going there) and all the 101 markets that use it will soon be gone they will want to at least get rid of any 119 markets that use it as well so they can close ECUF to save a few bucks...

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

But will they keep all five? Wouldn't it make more sense to get rid of them all, except for the NYC/LA channels also used for DNS? Then they could add more HD channels to 101. If they were going to keep SD markets beyond NYC and LA I guess Chicago as #3 in size might make sense, but Atlanta...

How to Modify Firmware on Hotel Receivers for Full Access to Channels and Settings?

You don't need to activate the box on your account to connect it and force the software download.

    DirecTV5 FCC filing

D5 is not providing service to Alaska/Hawaii, or anywhere else. It says they're doing this for "compliance with the Commission's geographic service rules". In other words, to keep Dish from trying to claim those 3 transponders for itself.

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

Well Chicago is #3 in DMA size and Philly is #4 so that seems like it would be an odd place to make the cutoff of MPEG2 DMAs that will survive vs those that will be cut. WPHL-D2 looks like an Antenna TV subchannel, or at least that's what Wikipedia and rabbitears say. Maybe that's why it was...

Help Identifying Transponder Numbers and Transmit Frequencies on Spectrum Analyzer

Without a connection to a working LNB it can't do any sort of autoconfiguration to figure out it is an SL3, or download the NIT from the satellite. It probably uses some old copy from a dark corner of the firmware that hasn't been updated in a decade and that's why you saw 110/119.

Help Identifying Transponder Numbers and Transmit Frequencies on Spectrum Analyzer

I believe I read somewhere that the SL3 duplicates 101 where the 110/119 would be in an SL5.

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

I'm pretty sure we will not see much more 4K coming via linear - definitely never see a full time 4K channel from anyone. Not worth the trouble to the networks, who know that linear is a ticking time bomb waiting for ESPN to make a full DTC offering. When that happens it'll be the starting gun...

Potential changes in AT&T's ownership of DirecTV

True but the numbers leaving cable/satellite linear TV is a lot higher than the numbers of people dying. There are a lot of people who have had it for years who are deciding they don't need it anymore. Unless you are a sports fan, or are so addicted to 24x7 cable news and your preferred network...

Potential changes in AT&T's ownership of DirecTV

I don't think it is so much people making "tough decisions", i.e. their personal finances are so stretched they have no choice but to cut out TV. There were a lot more people with financial issues in 2009/2010 after the housing bubble burst and unemployment spiked to 10%, but there was no rush...

Potential changes in AT&T's ownership of DirecTV

The money you are saving easily pays for that. Hire a third party installer for a few hundred bucks and he comes by with a dish and wire and installs however you like. He's not asking questions, he's just doing a job. And they may all have already had Directv do their installs for free. If you...

Potential changes in AT&T's ownership of DirecTV

Directv is going where the meat of the market is, and probably doesn't think the camper/tailgater market is worth worrying about beyond the existing customers who have H24/H25 for that use. The problem is that what works for camping/tailgating also works for account stacking, and the Genie 2 +...

Potential changes in AT&T's ownership of DirecTV

Why in the world would new satellites revitalize Directv? What do you think they will do with a new satellite that the current set can't? They do have new receivers - the Gemini and the H26K. Maybe you want an HS27 but other than adding tuners (which is a niche market getting more niche every...

4k Box Grounded to AC outlet

Sorta, but not really. Since the neutral acts as a return path for circuits it isn't a true ground. Try using it as an audio ground and you'll see the problem. I assume Directv is doing this because every other box has a coax connection which if installed according to their specs is grounded...

DIRECTV Transponder Map ~ Data 4/10/2024

Interesting news about D9S. Sounds like it is reaching the end of fuel life, and while it appears they'll be able to squeeze another six months out of it the end is nigh for most/all MPEG2 SD locals. Theoretically they could do something similar to what they did at 119 to deliver a limited...

4k Box Grounded to AC outlet

If they cared that much about grounding they should have given it a three prong plug.

    Local Channels 119 Shutoff?

I highly doubt Directv cares about that. They probably don't even care all that much about the handful of residential customers who still have SD equipment. What they are worried about (or at least were back in 2019 as shown by that internal document I posted with their MPEG2 SD decommissioning...

    Local Channels 119 Shutoff?

It sure doesn't look like it was planned though - that would be a weird way of discontinuing that service. At this point at has been long enough that even if they could fix it, it wouldn't be worth it because anyone depending on those SD channels will have upgraded to HD or whatever.
