Voomer moved to Comcast – initial thoughts

SkyAngel managed to get on the air as cheaply as possible (trading TP space for use of TPs with E*) and has very limited costs paying NO channel for the rights to rebroadcast. They I suspect that SkyAngel's biggest cost is advertising the service. They are also at around a million customers ...

So who is going to offer the best deal for Ex Voom customers

It was 40k at the end of Feb. The rest of your statement seems just as accurate. How many will it be May 1st? JL

So who is going to offer the best deal for Ex Voom customers

Comcast has nice introductory offers in my area - but the price jumps down the road. It wouldn't be bad if you knew you would be cancelling for something better in six months. I did that with DSL ... did six months of Comcast DSL until Verizon finally got DSL running (at less than half the...

    V00M's fate

...will get you. If Voom would have started in October 2003 with half the HD and more 'cable favorites' they would have pulled more customers from D*, E* and cable. If they would have marketed themselves to all 108 million US TV Households and not limit themselves to the then 1% with HDTV it...

Common sense says VOOM/HD Select is not dead!

USSB had its own satellite space. They were assigned 5 transponders on 101 and 3 transponders on 110 (plus 8 on 148 that were lost). The deal with D* (who had the other 27 transponders on 101) was to host USSB's content on USSB's five transponders and handle billing and sales of the channels...

Who Will Own Rainbow-1 after FCC Rules on Sale of Rainbow DBS Licenses?

Apparently your 'task' is to nitpick posters. Full quote followed by a one line comment about POSTER and not TOPIC? This is a discussion forum. I'm discussing the topic thank-you-very-much. Lets get back to it, ok? BTW: 334 records are now shown for IB 05-72, including late filed comments. JL

Who Will Own Rainbow-1 after FCC Rules on Sale of Rainbow DBS Licenses?

...forum and an easy way for Cablevision to unload the satellite. But Cablevision try to sell to someone else. In Voom's favor, no one else except E* seems interested in 61.5 . Sorry. The sale of the licenses and the satellite are one - and it isn't up to C Dolan to breach the contract - that...

"Attendance is manditory" on wednesday morning from installer....

The last 'official' number for the nation's fourth DBS provider is 40,000 - as stated in Cablevision's 10K and Voom HD LLC's petition. One news article stated a slightly higher number with over 5k waiting with (of course) an anonymous source. Your install is Thursday? How long have you been...

A few prayers for Voom's survival wouldn't hurt, would it? 40,000 customers want to keep their service.* JL * Assuming most all customers actually want to keep the service.

What E* told me about Voom programming...

30i is thirty full frames per second sent as 60 half frames (similar to NTSC TV). 30p is thirty full frames per second sent as 30 full frames. Not quite - HD 1080/24p, 1080/30p, 1080/30i (x1920, Square or 16:9) 720/24p, 720/30p, 720/60p (x1280, Square or 16:9) "Enhanced Definition" is...

What E* told me about Voom programming...

...than DirecTV. :D (And beyond the downrezzing on width there is still the level of compression that can ruin the picture. Voom's 1440HD could be worse than DirecTV's 1280HD if they choked the pipe. E*'s 1920HD could be choked down enough to lose the benefit of having the full pixel width.)...

What E* told me about Voom programming...

...The remainder of the 18 ATSC formats are not HD. ALL ATSC tuners MUST be able to tune ALL 18 formats. No ATSC TV is required to display *in* HD. Monitors must be able to display 810i or 540p in the 16:9 viewable area to be defined as HD. Monitors less than 480p or NTSC are defined as SD...

What E* told me about Voom programming...

I don't recall any specific definition of HD from the FCC. The industry has a spec, only 720p or 1080i are HD formats and if push came to shove the FCC defers to the industry's definition. JL

    More Swell News

I usually tell our local installer the rumors. He's too busy doing the work to be digging up dirt (other than to plant mounting poles). It always suprises me how some salescritter at a third party store or installer in the middle of nowhere gets quoted on these forums as if he was the personal...

No new channels this weekend - this is a bad sign

Don't panic! I find it odd that they added the new channels last week. Just because they didn't add any more on a weekend is no reason to predict doom and dispair. :) JL

    Other Opinions...

Right now the crow is still in the freezer. It hasn't been decided who will be eating it. It is premature to suggest "pro-Voom" or "anti-Voom" people should be eating crow. Charles Dolan is still facing a deadline that is three weeks away. Do Voomers expect yet another reprieve? Barring that...
