DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

Now THAT is top-notch customer support! How nice of Dish to encourage customers to seek out and switch to cheaper, better alternatives!

DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

Speaking of the TV business changing - I was catching up on some RSS feeds and ran across this post: Duh: The TV Business Is On The Verge Of Collapse | Techdirt FWIW, my wife got an offer from Dish on Saturday (for some reason they cannot figure out that our address already has Dish), and AMC...

DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

Right - even when searching for movies on premium channels, I use the Guide. I only go to the channel if I want to watch something there.

DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

...a corner. If they force me to pay ComCast to run cable (the quote I have heard is really high - many thousands), or, even easier, it looks like D* has an OTA HD addon, or I can buy an OTA HD recorder and make the switch. Either way, goodbye Dish. I would hate to do it, but I would if forced....

DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

...for locals has improved in the last year or so, but 129 is really weather sensitive. So, no Dish means no local-channel time shifting. No E* or D* means no non-OTA TV at all. No broadband means not really watching anything other than OTA except for Netflix/Redbox/etc. It would be like 1974...

DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

...an episode of "The Walking Dead", and that Dish really wants it all to work out. Of course, for unique programming, there is no channel Dish can substitute for AMC. I might have switched already except D* cannot/will not provide locals in my area. That is why I left them in the first place....

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

What size would you recommend? Does the DVR still only recognize the first 750 GB, or does it use more?

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

@LaddyBoy - Interesting. I used "platter" when I meant "disk", but either way, I did not know there was any trickery going on under the covers. So the Toshiba implementation is two 500 GB drives emulating 1 TB of storage? That is why the earlier poster mentioned a virtual drive.... @KAB...

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

So, to be sure, can I go from 722 -> 722k, or just 722 -> 722? My 722 is acting weird - when recording any local channel, OTA or from satellite, it destroys the local channels on satellite. Go to menu 6 1 1 and just look at the screen (no check switch, nothing - just show it) and it clears up...

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

Ahhh...what a bummer. That's really...harsh! Thanks for the help. I bought it about a year ago because the price was good at the time, and it had a power supply. Should have just bought a drive caddy instead. I have looked a good bit at the thread on EHDs, but it is somewhat disorganized -...

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

Thanks for the answers! Yes, I have the feature activated and the EHD is externally powered. Not sure about whether it is single or double platter.... Model is PH3100U-1EXB. My wife is using an identical one on her Mac (I bought two). Got the Toshiba because it seemed reliable....

ViP 722: Error 850 with new Toshiba 1 TB EHD

I have tried to get my new Toshiba 1 TB EHD to work on a ViP 722 a couple of times. Each time, I plug everything in from scratch, so I am pretty sure that the new USB cable is properly connected. Each time, I have to cycle power on the DVR to get it to even recognize anything has changed. In...

Check signals fixes signals - please explain again!

Thanks for the advice - this thing is driving us crazy. I will give the unplugged reset a try. magnum2066 - I can see what you mean. I am leaning towards bad tuner or LNB. The system was installed brand new in November 2008, so it has not been in place that long. This is the second...

Check signals fixes signals - please explain again!

It worked like clockwork this weekend.... On a few occasions the picture on channels served from 129 would go to pieces. Going to the check signal page and then exiting cleared it right up. My wife lost nearly two hours of the Olympics because of it, and I almost had to sleep on the couch! If I...

Check signals fixes signals - please explain again!

East Coast - yes I can generally get good reception from 110 and 119, but would be just as happy to go to EA for the channels I get from those satellites. However, my locals are served from 129.

Check signals fixes signals - please explain again!

We just turn the receiver off... ...as recommended by Dish. No worry :) Yeah, I wish the signal did not go up and down so much as well, but serving channels to east coast viewers on 129 is the cause. There are too many coincidental things happening with my receiver - like clockwork, checking...

Check signals fixes signals - please explain again!

Thursday night, a whole slew of channels were unwatchable: SBYND, most SD Starz, most SD Encore, etc. They were still bad on Friday morning. FWIW, the receiver is always powered down at night. I went to the check signals menu, signals looked good on 110 and 119, and when I exited, the channels...

Why would looking at signal strength "fix" reception (no check switch run)?

I agree a better 129 would be nice... ...but that is as good as it will get where I live. There are a couple of trees I could cut that might make it better (it is unwatchable in the leaf season). The only reason I keep the satellite locals is so I will have a channel guide for OTA. I am...

Why would looking at signal strength "fix" reception (no check switch run)?

Yeah... ...which is why those of us who could easily get the signal from an adjacent market that is already on EA should be allowed to do so.

Why would looking at signal strength "fix" reception (no check switch run)?

No those numbers are signal strength on whatever transponder was selected. I did not change the transponders to see if anything changed - in my experience, that generally has little to no effect. Basically, it looked like the signal strengths on 110 and 119 were adequate, so I should not have...

Why would looking at signal strength "fix" reception (no check switch run)?

So looking at the signal strength display caused some kind of reacquisition?

Why would looking at signal strength "fix" reception (no check switch run)?

Was trying to look at something on Encore channels on Friday night - all of the SD were unwatchable but the HD versions were great (different satellites?). Went to the setup screen to check the satellite signals - 119 was up around 75, 110 was fluctuating between 50 and 60, and 129 was going...

One channel bad, other good - same satellite.

Yeah, tell me about it... ...the other night, we were watching a channel, and an OTA show was to start recording soon - I think it was Survivor. We checked the channel, and it was clear as a bell - even watched the show start. Went away to watch something else, then went back to the survivor...

One channel bad, other good - same satellite.

Ohhh - it could be *their* reception.... I did not realize there was another antenna component to the system. We have seen some odd things on the OTA signal as well: We were recording a show (The Amazing Race) that had been preempted by football Sunday before last. We knew it might happen, so...

One channel bad, other good - same satellite.

So it would be like an uplink problem... ...rather than a reception problem? That makes sense. My wife never buys that explanation :)
