    vacation home

Another thought about moving a receiver each trip… It’s remotely possible that DISH might clamp down on someone who moves a receiver and is not at home to deal with auditor questions. What the audit team might do is disable all but the primary receiver until they can speak with the...

Will Picture quality improve with 1080P?

If the camera that made the video was a 1080 and the screen is a 720, OF COURSE the picture will be degraded. How does a picture produced in 1080 get displayed on a 720 screen? Does it simply throw away every third row? Whatever happens, picture information is lost and definition suffers...

    Quad-shield RG6 and electric wire

Good electricians do, but the temptation to save time by drilling only half as many holes sometimes gets the better of them... :)

    Quad-shield RG6 and electric wire

Microwave ovens heat food by generating MHz frequencies that can interfere with cell phones, wireless networks and other electronic equipment that operates in those frequencies (the innards of TV’s do). Even though the current load in the microwave circuit would be high, the culprit is more...

    Quad-shield RG6 and electric wire

You have a couple things going in your favor. Quad-shield coax does a good job of rejecting interference and the 60 Hz power-line frequency isn’t likely to cause serious problems with MHz/GHz signals. Any induced signals would be directly related to the current in electrical circuits. If they...

    Remote ?

One additional thought… For ease of remembering them, you might find it useful to set the addresses to “3” and “5”.

    Remote ?

I don’t think the “AUX” button can be programmed to control a receiver. I recall trying to do that years ago using my 508 remote, but without success. I’d like to be proven wrong, though. Maybe there's an undocumented solution DISH provides the 501/508 instruction manual here. In case you...

    Ebay

Excellent analogy. The seller has no responsibility to help the satellite company protect its revenue stream and shouldn’t be concerned about the company’s enforcement problems. If I had the device, I’d provide the information and sell to the highest bidder.

    ATSC Modulator

If the copyright controls are embedded in the data stream, it really doesn’t matter what conduit moves the signal around. I expect the extensive cable infrastructure will be used and modulators will eventually be commonly available. They probably won’t be cheap, though.

    ATSC Modulator

Certainly. All the existing coax distribution systems (commercial, educational, corporate, etc.) that are now SD will be converted to HD over time. The necessary modulators will be available. “When?” is the only unknown at this point.

Trying to connect two TV's to TV2

Old TV’s could tune to channel 73, but newer ones don’t go above 69. Have you tried using a lower channel number?

Likelihood of failure of non-burial grade coax?

Of course that would be a source of infiltration. I was assuming that the conduit itself was properly assembled and watertight.

Likelihood of failure of non-burial grade coax?

Water can exist in the conduit, but not just from infiltration. If you’re in an area of high humidity, the humidity will be 100% in the conduit since it’s in the cooler earth, and water droplets can form even if the conduit is leak-free. As Mike500 said, the best solution is to use direct...

    Construction on A new House!!

Instead of running cables, I suggest you install conduit (i.e., plastic “pipes”) to the locations you want to serve. The cables can be installed in them at the same time or later as your needs develop. Having conduit allows you to add lines or replace what’s there if/when you see the need for...

    Extending UHF remote range

Yes, you can extend the remote antenna that way. I extend my remote to an outbuilding about 150’ away using this technique. I have two antennas, actually. One is in the house near the receiver and the other in the outbuilding. Using a splitter/combiner at the receiver, a remote control at either...

What no one will tell you about HDTV...

No, it doesn’t. But people who claim to understand the fundamentals should acknowledge that statements like: Picture Quality has Nothing at all to do with Signal Strength simply aren’t true.

What no one will tell you about HDTV...

OK. So now what happens when the control sum doesn’t validate the frame? And how do you know the control sum itself isn’t bad data? Once again, the only valid measure (comparing the delivered data with the original source) is not available to you and me – only to technicians at the uplink...

What no one will tell you about HDTV...

How do you know there are no errors? As I mentioned in another post, the only way to know if errors exist is by comparing the data in the originally uploaded signal with that sent to the TV. Unfortunately, we have no easy way to make that comparison.

Likelihood of failure of non-burial grade coax?

Plastic conduit is so cheap that it hardly makes sense not to use it. If a problem ever arises with the cable or a newer cable standard develops, simply pull the old out and the new in. Critters (gophers, etc.) are much less likely to be a problem when conduit is used. The conduit can also be...
