The reciever's are getting a digital signal from the dish. Being a digital signal, your reciever is going to output full picture quality or none at all. Analog cable tv would degrade depending on the cable condition and the number of splitters.

A 501 or a 508 (without a fee) works exactly the same as a 510 (with a fee). Dish calls one a PVR and one a DVR. It's just a name. The only reason to get a 510 would be the larger HD. /Benjamin

Those numbers sound fine. The problems you described do not sound like they would be caused by your signal strength being too low. If your signal strength was too low, you could expect to see frequent error messages about losing satellite connection and parts of the picture actually breaking...
