    Hopper OTA What antenna

Before you spend tons and tons of money on a giant antenna, I would try a 4 Bay or 8 Bay UHF antenna, which is flat and can mount on the side of your chimney. I saw a test of UHF antennas from years and years back, and these little 4 and 8 bay UHF antennas work as well or better than the large...

    OTA

I think there is an advantage for them to use it. If customers like the subchannels, there is no guide data, and they find programs they like but want to record, then they'll go get another recorder, and may dump Dish. It common knowledge in the business world, to have your customers get "ALL"...

HDCP on Dish (for upcoming Slingbox 350/500 models)

They are just going to have that many more people "cut the cord" if they put HDCP on everything. Michael

211k - is there a noticeable lag between HDMI and composite outputs?

Today's TVs have a delay from the time they receive the video signal, until the time it appears on the screen, often 50-100 ms. This delay is caused by video processing. Some TVs take longer than others. You definitely will have a lip sync issue, which would be anything over 22 ms. It's just...

What's Available in DD 5.1 Audio on Dish?

95% sounds good. I do watch different material, though. I rarely watch sports unless it is the Olympics or college football, and I don't watch primetime really at all. Of the HD channels, I watch Encore East, History, Bravo, Speed, Nat Geo, Fox, Fox Business, CNBC, Animal Planet, Reelz...

What's Available in DD 5.1 Audio on Dish?

Thanks for the tips guys. What would be different about the center compared to the the side speakers, other than it is usually horizontal? Am I correct in that 5.1 is mostly with just movies, and some sports (ESPN?)? Are we talking 5% of programming material on other HD channels (History, Nat...

What's Available in DD 5.1 Audio on Dish?

I've heard that some programs may say 5.1, but many shows end up being stereo. What's your experience? I don't really like the simulated surround sound, so I was wondering if I am really going to get much use out of the extra channels. So let's say you have Speed Channel in HD, will the audio...

What's Available in DD 5.1 Audio on Dish?

I only have a 2.0 audio system now. I thought if a lot of content is being broadcast in 5.1 now, I would invest the time and money to upgrade (which is fairly big investment in both categories, especially the rear channels). I've looked at the program guide, but it doesn't really say, at least...

A thread for subs to request the 3D Olympic channel for DIRT

I voiced my displeasure over their no 3D Olympics decision on their website feedback form. I got an email back, apologizing. The bottom line is, if they get enough people complaining, they will step up to the 3D plate, instead of sitting on the bench. We've got two more weeks of Olympics...

Is Dish going to provide the NBC 3D Channel for the Olympics?

I understand your point, but on the flip side, if a company's management only thinks in the short term, they are doomed, too. The public relations of not carrying 3D for the Olympics is horribly negative. Imagine your neighbors come up to you, and ask, "Wasn't that opening ceremony in 3D...

Is Dish going to provide the NBC 3D Channel for the Olympics?

I have to think someone in management has the same sort of illogical anti-3D bias that you see by a few here on the forums. Maybe the guy is 3D blind, and bitter. Who knows? In the end, it is going hurt them. If there was some technical reason they couldn't broadcast it (and I can't think of...

Is Dish going to provide the NBC 3D Channel for the Olympics?

That's nonsense, and just plain a bad excuse. Didn't they just drop some channels due to a contract dispute (AMC, IFC, etc.)? They could even use the bandwidth from one of the PPV channels. Michael

    Dish Class Action Law Suit?

Exactly. Nothing says you have get the DVDs or Blu-ray disks. Nothing says you have to use the streaming. You would just get the Platinum Channels as before, under a new name, with some additional features you could use later, should you so desire, at the same price you were paying before...

    30th Anniversary promo ending

I just found out about dishonline.com, thanks to internet forums. You can browse and watch the movies anytime you want, just like Netflix streaming. Last night, I missed the first part of a movie, so I recorded the rest with my DVR, and watched the first part I missed online first. :cool...

    Dish to desktop computer

There are a few ways of doing it. Probably the most popular is to use the Hauppauge HD-PVR along with Windows 7 Media Center. The component HD output from the Dish receiver goes to the HD-PVR, which connects to the computer with a USB port. Installation of this is not for the faint of heart...

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

I was wondering if anyone has done an A-B test of Component vs. HDMI picture quality on their Dish receiver. How did the Component output hold up for clarity and color? What Dish receiver were you using? Thanks! Michael

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

I'm using a SmartLevel (digital). It's been calibrated, too. I won't be messing with it. It's dailed in about as well as possible.:) Michael

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

BINGO! I was using the bolt, instead of the edge. It's funny that the skew is marked in red, but not the edge for elevation. Nevertheless, the elevation still came out to 53 degrees, instead of 49. I checked the pole again, and it is within 1/2 degree of vertical with the dish on it. Thank...

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

The mast is plumb from what I am measuring. I've checked it with both a digital level and a bubble level. I checked it on two sides 90 degrees apart. I also flipped the level to be sure it read +90 and -90. It did. Could the degree markings stamped onto the side of the support be off? Michael

Dish's Locals Pricing All Screwed Up

After replacing my receiver, and transferring my packages to the new receiver, my grandfathered Superstations for $3.99 was lost, and replaced at $5.99. So I dropped the Superstations. Needless to say, I wasn't happy about this. Now I see the pricing on the locals is all screwed up at Dish...

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

I appreciate the tip. I found the problem. Dish said to point the dish to an elevation angle of 49, and it turned out it needed to be all the way up to 58. A summary of what I found is in post #37. Thanks! Michael

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

Success!!! I tried 3 degrees up, and panned the dish. Still no signal. I followed scoebyx's advice. I connected my Dish PVR 508 to Port 1, and the 211K to Port 2. Still no signal. I ran a check switch on the PVR, and still no signal. I doubled checked the azimuth for 180 degrees true...

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

Yes, it says "1 to 1" at first, and then changes to "1 of 4" which it completes. I'm going to take another look at the shielding, just in case. I have checked the mast with a digital level, and it is coming in at 89.5 degrees or better. I even calibrated it, and swung the meter 180 degrees...

Changed All Hardware - Still Can't Get A Signal!

This is one of the things I started checking, but I can see clear sky from 150 to 210 degrees (target azimuth is 180 true). Unfortunately, the pole is on a balcony so I can move it a whole lot. I double checked the connection to the receiver (about 3 times), and it is going into the correct...
