I don't think people have given up on getting a 921. But the massive 921 timer problems reported here and elsewhere could have put some people off until they get the software stabilized.

My 921 was working (more or less) from early January until recently, ie L184 when all hell broke loose, missed timers, re-labelled timers, etc requiring frequent re-boots and timer re-entry. In its current condition it is virtually useless. After all the reason we have a PVR is to save time...

At L184 we are still seeing masses of timers either not firing or being mis-labelled. These problems are not 'latent defects' - they are easily reproducible and are being reported by dozens on this and other forums, and we have gone through a number of software upgrades so they are not...

You forgot the most important test phase for a mass market consumer electronics product with complex software - beta test. The more complex the product (especially GUI features), the more beta testers and longer beta test period are required. Dish's product development process is still immature...

Dishnetwork is a national outfit and has little to gain by acting heroically in locally isolated disasters. Whereas the local cable company has a lot to gain via free PR on the local news.

No big surprise - E* using the MPAA as a scapegoat in their excuse that 'content protection' was the reason for shutting off the 921 firewire output. True to form.

Just the opposite. My brother in law has digital cable a 100" screen and his SD stations have no evidence of overcompression and artifacting unlike Dish on my 100" screen which looks horrible.

IMHO this is just the latest episode of E* fraud. If they don't come clean it will encourage piracy. Many early adopters are also technically astute professionals, ie chip designers et al who have access to equipment that can easily reverse engineer the most complex ASIC.

This incident is akin to piracy on Dish's part and tends to justify those who steal the satellite signal and indiscriminately copy DVDs using DVDShrink. If they want to lower the ethics bar we can accommodate them !
